Nicosia: President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, has expressed his satisfaction with the results of the informal European Council held in Cyprus, as well as his pride for its successful organization, noting that this event has enhanced the country's international footprint.
According to Cyprus News Agency, in statements on Saturday afternoon, on the sidelines of a march in Nicosia aiming to raise cancer awareness, the President noted that, despite the informal nature of the meeting, critical issues related to the Cypriot Presidency's goal for a strategically autonomous European Union were discussed.
He explained that informal Councils typically do not make decisions due to their nature. However, the discussions focused on three main issues aligning with the Cypriot Presidency's goal for a strategically autonomous EU. These included defence and security, specifically Article 42.7, energy with immediate and long-term measures towards an energy union, and the single market and competitiveness.
The President described the meeting as having a significant impact on the future of the EU and its objectives. He also mentioned the positive feedback from leaders of countries in the region who attended the event in Nicosia. He stated, 'I have proudly accepted numerous congratulations from my counterparts at the European Council and beyond.'
President Christodoulides emphasized that the summit's outcome strengthens Cyprus' international role. He noted, 'it enhances the international standing of the Republic of Cyprus; we are demonstrating in practice that the Republic of Cyprus is part of the solutions to the challenges we face.'
He expressed pride in the country's achievements, acknowledging those who contributed to the successful event in terms of both organization and content.
When asked about a statement by President of France, Emmanuel Macron, regarding Article 42.7 of the EU Treaties (mutual defence clause), President Christodoulides highlighted the tangible support Cyprus received. He noted, 'we saw in Cyprus that they are not just words-without having invoked that specific article we received an immediate response from five EU member states,' adding that this serves as a basis for future planning if the clause is invoked.
