Nicosia: Cypriot athletes competing in Judo at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, clinched on Friday a gold and a silver medal. The Cyprus team now has a total of three gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Sofia Asvesta won gold in the women's under-52kg judo category. In a thrilling final against Syria's Soumiya Iraoui, Asvesta fought for eight minutes and 20 seconds before securing victory with the only Yuko of the contest. Asvesta had also defeated Iraoui at the Paris Olympic Games two years ago.
Petros Christodoulides won the silver medal in the men's under-66kg judo category at the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games. After defeating Morocco's Bouchita Abdrahame and Spain's Adrian Nieto Chinarro in the semi-final, Christodoulides was beaten in the final by Serbia's Marko Djordjic, securing, nevertheless, an important success for the Cyprus team.
