India’s support for the Cyprus problem reiterated by the High Commissioner

India’s full support and principled position on the Cyprus problem was expressed on Friday by High Commissioner of India, Madhumita Hazarika Baghat, during her farewell meeting with the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou.

A statement from the House said that Demetriou received on Thursday the High Commissioner of India to Cyprus on the occasion of the completion of her duties on the island.

Demetriou expressed her gratitude for the excellent cooperation with Baghat as well as her appreciation for India’s principled stance and long-standing support to the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem.

The House of Representatives President also stressed the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to the efforts to resume negotiations within the agreed framework and in accordance with the UN resolutions, with the aim of the reunification of Cyprus.

Referring to the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries, the Indian High Commissioner reaffirmed India’s full support and princ
ipled position on the Cyprus problem.

Baghat thanked Demetriou for the excellent cooperation with her and the other Members of the House during her term of office, underlining the important contribution of the House of Representatives in further deepening and broadening the relations of cooperation and solidarity between Cyprus and India, especially at inter-parliamentary level.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
