Holgun to Convene Critical Cyprus Leaders Meeting Amid Ongoing Peace Efforts

Nicosia: UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, Mara ngela Holgun, will convene a joint meeting with the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides and the Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhrman, on January 28, the UN in Cyprus has announced. Holgun will be visiting the island from January 26 to 29 and will also hold separate meetings with the two leaders on January 27, in addition to meeting with the negotiators of both sides on January 26.

According to Cyprus News Agency, a press statement by the UN spokesperson in Cyprus revealed that Holgun recently concluded a visit to Brussels, where she met with EU High Representative Kaya Kallas. During her visit to Cyprus, Holgun will engage with the negotiators from both the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides on January 26, as part of her ongoing efforts to foster dialogue and cooperation.

The spokesperson outlined that Holgun will then hold separate meetings with the Greek Cypriot leader and the Turkish Cypriot leader on January 27. The highlight of her visit will be the joint meeting scheduled for January 28, which aims to build on the discussions held during a previous meeting on December 11, 2025.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern region. Despite numerous rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution remains elusive, primarily due to Turkish resistance. The most recent negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without a breakthrough.

In 2025, the Secretary-General hosted two informal meetings on Cyprus, one in March in Geneva and another in July in New York. A tripartite meeting with Cyprus leaders also took place in late September during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week. Mara ngela Holgun is actively engaging with the parties involved, alongside former European Commissioner Johannes Hahn, who is expected to contribute to the settlement process in collaboration with Holgun.
