European Parliament Approves EU Aid for Cyprus Wildfires Relief

Brussels: The plenary of the European Parliament has approved the allocation of £9.21 million to Cyprus from the European Union Solidarity Fund, following the forest fires of July 2025. This decision is part of a larger £144.1 million support package for Cyprus, Spain, and Romania, which were all affected by natural disasters in 2025. The proposal saw overwhelming support, with 642 votes in favor, 13 against, and one abstention.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus experienced unprecedented forest fires in the Limassol and Paphos districts in July 2025, exacerbated by prolonged drought, extreme heatwaves, and strong winds. The report estimates the direct damage at £252.68 million. The fires severely impacted thousands of residents, resulted in the deaths of two individuals, and devastated nearly 900 private properties, while also causing significant disruptions to education and healthcare services.

Cyprus has already received an advance payment of £2.3 million to aid initial recovery efforts, with a remaining £6.89 million yet to be disbursed. The European Parliament, in its resolution, expressed solidarity with the victims, their families, and all those affected by the natural disasters in Cyprus, Romania, and Spain. It also urged for accelerated and simplified procedures to ensure that aid reaches the affected areas swiftly.

Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) highlighted that the EU Solidarity Fund has a limited budget and cannot be the sole instrument for responding to major natural disasters. They emphasized the need for investment in prevention, adaptation, and resilience measures to mitigate the effects of climate change.
