Brussels: The 2023 Erasmus+ Annual Report highlights the programme’s significant contributions to lifelong learning and cooperation, with an emphasis on social inclusion, green and digital transitions, and the promotion of EU values. The report details how Erasmus+ has supported numerous projects addressing the repercussions of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, including funding to enhance cooperation in educational fields.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Erasmus+ programme had a total budget of over £4.5 billion in 2023, marking a 12.5% increase from the previous year. This budget facilitated nearly 32,000 projects involving more than 84,500 organisations. The programme’s learning mobility initiatives provided opportunities for over 1.3 million participants, including students, educators, youth workers, and sports coaches, allowing them to study, train, work, and volunteer abroad.
Since its inception in 1987, Erasmus+ has enabled 15.1 million people to engage in international educational
experiences. The programme prioritises inclusivity and diversity, reaching individuals from various age groups and socio-economic backgrounds. In 2023, more than 200,000 participants were from underrepresented groups, including migrants, people with disabilities, and EU citizens in remote or economically challenged areas.
In an effort to promote environmental sustainability, 23% of Erasmus+ participants used low-emission transport, such as buses and trains, for their travel in 2023. The programme also supported the Digital Education Action Plan by facilitating digital skill acquisition for 31,890 participants, including young people and educational staff.
Erasmus+ plays a crucial role in promoting European identity and democratic values. In 2023, £390.6 million funded 1,460 projects aimed at enhancing democratic participation. The programme continues to adapt to contemporary challenges, including support for those affected by the conflict in Ukraine. It facilitated the integration of Ukrainian refugees into
EU education systems and provided educational materials for Ukrainian students.
The Erasmus+ 2025 call for proposals commenced on 19 November 2024, continuing to build on its legacy as a key EU initiative. Since its establishment, the programme has expanded to include all educational fields and countries beyond its original scope, reinforcing its status as a prominent EU programme.
