Diagne Briefs UN Security Council on Cyprus Issue, Potential Visit by UNSG

New york: The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force on the island (UNFICYP), Khassim Diagne, is set to brief the United Nations Security Council today at 15:00 New York time (19:00 GMT) during closed consultations. Diagne's briefing will concentrate on the UN Secretary-General António Guterres' two most recent reports concerning his Good Offices mission and UNFICYP. According to Cyprus News Agency, developments regarding the Cyprus issue are anticipated following a visit to Cyprus by the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, towards the end of this month. Furthermore, there is a possibility that the UN Secretary-General himself might visit Nicosia during the same timeframe. Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and took control of the northern third of the island. Efforts to resolve the division through UN-led peace talks have repeatedly failed, primarily due to Turkish intransigence. The most recent negotiations in July 2017, held at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without an agreement. Following informal meetings in 2025 and a subsequent pause lasting several months, preparations are currently being made for a new meeting in a broader format as the term of UN Secretary-General António Guterres approaches its conclusion. María Angela Holguín, who serves as Guterres' Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is tasked with engaging the relevant parties. Meanwhile, Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto represents the European Commission as its Special Representative for Cyprus, succeeding former EU special envoy Johannes Hahn.
