Nicosia: Minister of Defence, Vasilis Palmas, announced on Monday that the Ministry has set the strengthening of research, development, and innovation as a strategic priority, with new projects to be unveiled in 2026, focusing on crucial technological sectors. The Minister highlighted that these initiatives aim to enhance both defence capabilities and the economic development of the country.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Palmas emphasized the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to supporting the advancement of new technologies, products, and services. This support is aimed not only at bolstering defence but also at contributing to the broader economic growth of the nation. The government aims to establish a unified and functional defence innovation ecosystem, fostering collaboration among science, industry, and the armed forces.
The Minister made these remarks at an event organized by the Armaments and Defence Capabilities’ Development Directorate of the Ministry of Defence. The event showcased the outcomes of the ‘ATHENA’ Action and two innovative projects developed as part of this initiative.
Palmas explained that the ‘ATHENA’ Action was implemented to leverage the country’s know-how, creativity, and technological capabilities, with the goal of enhancing the defence and operational capacities of the National Guard. He introduced two projects, “THESEAS” and “DroneEyE,” as examples of how domestic scientific research and technological development can serve as force multipliers and deterrent forces.
Palmas expressed confidence that these projects are just the beginning and will serve as the foundation for a modern, sustainable, and dynamic ecosystem of research and innovation in the defence sector. He stated that the goal is to gradually strengthen the self-reliance and technological independence of the Republic of Cyprus.
Addressing future challenges, Palmas reiterated the Ministry of Defence’s strategic priority of strengthening research, development, and innovation. He mentioned that new programs, collaborations, and initiatives are already being promoted as a continuation of the “ATHENA” Action, with new projects set to be announced in 2026, focusing on crucial technological sectors.
