Nicosia: Cyprus’ and Greece’s Defence Ministries are set to advance their synergies and cooperation within the framework of the EU SAFE Regulation, as asserted by the two countries’ Defence Ministers, Vassilis Palmas and Nikos Dendias. Following their meeting in Nicosia, both ministers emphasized the importance of collaboration to bolster their defence capabilities.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Vassilis Palmas highlighted that the meeting was part of their regular engagements focusing on bilateral relations. Discussions centered on the evolving geopolitical situation in the region and the EU SAFE Regulation, which aims to strengthen the EU’s defence industry and reinforce Europe’s defensive stance. Palmas underscored the necessity of collaboration between the two ministries to enhance their defensive measures for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Nikos Dendias expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended by Vassilis Palmas and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. He noted the meeting as an opportunity to discuss the complex geopolitical dynamics of the Eastern Mediterranean. The ministers explored further cooperation possibilities under the SAFE Regulation, which Dendias noted has a stringent timetable, presenting an opportunity for deeper collaboration between Cyprus and Greece.
Addressing questions about potential veto actions by EU member states should Turkey seek to join SAFE, Dendias pointed out the complexity of the SAFE Regulation. He emphasized the European Commission’s commitment to discussing contracts between the EU and third countries in a manner that requires unanimous voting, ensuring that those posing threats to the EU cannot participate in mechanisms designed to counter aggression.
Dendias concluded by expressing the expectation for all European countries to align with the shared understanding of protecting European space and values, including democracy and human rights, within the framework of the EU SAFE Regulation.
