Troodos: The assumption of the EU Presidency by Cyprus is perceived as the greatest national mission, President Nikos Christodoulides stated during a Cabinet meeting at the presidential residence in Troodos. He emphasized that this role presents a unique opportunity for Cyprus to assert its voice and role within the European Union.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President highlighted that preparations for the upcoming Presidency in the first half of 2026 are on track, with plans for 258 meetings to be held in Cyprus. This includes 84 meetings scheduled in Nicosia and 33 in each of the other districts under the Republic’s control. The island nation is also set to host an Informal European Council on April 23.
President Christodoulides noted that preparatory visits, including those by the College of Commissioners and European Parliament delegations, will occur before Cyprus assumes the Presidency. The priorities during Cyprus’ tenure will involve addressing EU files inherited from the Danish Presidency, with a strong focus on the Multiannual Financial Framework.
He further mentioned that discussions would focus on simplifying EU procedures to enhance competitiveness among member states. Security and Defense issues will also be prominent, aimed at strengthening the EU’s strategic autonomy.
On Cyprus’ specific priorities, the President mentioned Defense and Security, with several meetings planned at various ministerial levels. Migration will be a key focus, with the implementation of the Migration Pact during the Cypriot Presidency. Water security and housing challenges, particularly for the younger generation, are other priorities.
President Christodoulides expressed the government’s intent to bring the EU closer to the Middle East, a goal supported by both the EU and regional states. He referenced his meeting with Egypt’s Foreign Minister, where the need for the EU to engage with regional partners was discussed, aligning with plans for the Informal European Council.
