Cyprus posts small fiscal deficit of 0.05% of GDP in first half of 2022

Cyprus General Government posted a small deficit amounting to €11.4 million or 0.05% of GDP in the first half of 2022, compared with a deficit of €751 mn or 3.2% of GDP in the period of January-June 2021. The preliminary fiscal results published by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat) show that the improvement is driven by the reduction in public spending as Covid-19 pandemic measures have been phased out, combined with increased revenue driven by the recovery of economic activity.

Value in retail trade accelerates, volume marks subdued growth June

Value in retail trade marked a sizeable annual increase in June while, activity in volume remained more subdued, reflecting the price hikes that accelerated following the war in Ukraine. According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat) the Turnover Value Index of Retail Trade for June 2022 recorded a sharp increase of 20.1% compared to the respective period of last year, whereas the Turnover Volume Index of Retail Trade for the same month increased by an annual 9.3%. For the period January-June 2022, the value index is estimated to have recorded an increase of 14.4% and the volume index marked an increase of 4.6% compared to the same period of 2021, Cystat added.

Unemployment in Cyprus at 5.1% this June according to Eurostat

The seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in Cyprus was 5.1% in June 2022, compared to 6.6% in the euro area and 6.0% in the EU, according to figures published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In Cyprus, the unemployment rate rose slightly from 4.9% in May 2022, and dropped compared to June 2021 when it was 8.8%. In the euro area, the unemployment rate was stable compared with May 2022 and down from 7.9% in June 2021.

EU disburses new €1 billion macro-financial assistance operation for Ukraine

The European Commission, on behalf of the EU, disbursed on Monday the first half (€500 million) of a new €1 billion macro-financial assistance (MFA) operation for Ukraine. A press release by the Commission says that the second tranche (another €500 million) will be disbursed today.

Pure new credit climbs by an annual 26% to €1.72 billion in the first half of 2022

Pure new credit granted by the Cypriot banking institutions in June rose to €343.6 million marking an increase of 32% compared with the previous month, data published on Tuesday by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) show. According to the CBC, pure new credit granted in the period of January – June 2022 amounted to 1.72 billion marking an increase of 26% compared with the respective period of last year.

Commission announces funding opportunities for sport and promoting sustainability through sport

The European Commission has announced two new funding opportunities in the area of grassroots sport and sports infrastructure, as well as the promotion of sustainable behaviours through sport publicity. The two calls for proposals issued are for the preparatory action for “Grassroots sport programmes and infrastructure innovation” with a total budget of 1.95 million euro and the pilot project “Sport for People and Planet, a new approach on sustainability through sport in Europe” with a total budget of €1.44 million. Commission announces funding for migration infrastructure in Cyprus

The European Commission has announced it will be funding new projects to support reception, asylum and return systems in Cyprus, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Poland. The total funding for all countries amounts to 171 million euro and will be directed to projects related to their reception, asylum and return systems, and is intended for national authorities as well as international organisations.

Eurostat: RandD government budget allocation per person in Cyprus under EU average

Cyprus has allocated 103 euro per person to research and development in 2021, compared to 244 euro in the EU’s average, according to data on government budget allocations for RandD published by Eurostat, the statistical service of the European Union. In 2021, the total government budget allocations for RandD across the EU stood at 109,250 mln euro, equivalent to 0.8% of GDP.

Inflation in Cyprus hits double digits for July, at 10.9%

Inflation in July 2022, hit the double-digit mark, recording an increase of 10.9%, with the Consumer Price Index increasing by 1.39 units and reached 113.63 units compared to 112.24 units in June 2022. According to data published by the Statistical Service on Thursday, the largest changes in economic origin when compared to the index of July 2021 were recorded in Electricity, by 61.7% and in Petroleum Products by 44.1%.

Poverty risk for low employment households is lower in Cyprus than EU average, Eurostat data show

The at-risk-of-poverty rate for people aged less than 65 years living in households with very low work intensity in Cyprus was 51.6% in 2020, compared to 64.0% in the EU, according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical service of the European Union. This rate ranged from 48.7% in Denmark and 49.9% in Ireland to more than 70.0% of the population in nine EU Member States. It reached a peak of 85.4% in Lithuania, followed by Romania (84.2%) and Latvia (80.6%).

Almost 60% increase in fuel prices in 2022, price surges in many other products and services

Price of liquid fuels saw an increase by 58.2% from January 2022 until July 2022, according to data published by the Cyprus Consumers Association. According to the CCA, the biggest price increase from January until today was in liquid fuels, which rose by 58.2%, while edible oils recorded an increase by 53.54% and hotels by 51.08%.

European Commission has expressed concerns regarding proposed VAT legislation in Cyprus, spokesperson confirms

The European Commission has sent a letter to Cypriot authorities underlying the need to rectify the situation regarding amendments to the country’s VAT legislation, Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta said responding to a question by the Cyprus News Agency. Exports in services in Cyprus almost at pre-pandemic levels in 2021 according to Eurostat

EU member states exported services worth a total of 1027 billion euro to countries outside the EU in 2021, a 13% increase compared with 2020 (910 billion euro), according to provisional data released by Eurostat. Poland granted most temporary protections to Ukrainians in June, according to Eurostat

Poland was in June the EU member state which granted the highest number of temporary protection statuses to people fleeing Ukraine (60,125) as a consequence of Russia’s invasion, according to data published by Eurostat, the statistical service of the European Union. The total number of beneficiaries in Cyprus, excluding June for which there is no data, has been 6,575 since March. Poland granted temporary protection status to 60,125 people in June, followed by Romania (10,360), Ireland (6,985) and Bulgaria (6,920).

Recommendations for small and medium sized enterprises against cybercrime

The biggest cybercrime problems faced by Cypriot small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the last 12 months were phishing, account takeover or impersonation attacks (16%), higher than the EU average (11%) and viruses, spyware or malicious software (excluding ransomware) (8%) at a rate lower than the EU average (14%), according to a report by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Home Affairs (DG HOME) published in May, based on the results of a Eurobarometer conducted in November-December 2021 on “SMEs and Cybercrime”.

Almost 1.2 million passengers travelled to and from Larnaka and Pafos airports in July, which translates to 82% of the traffic for the corresponding month in 2019. A representative of Hermes Airports told CNA that “August is considered peak season and there is increased traffic at Cypriot airports these days.” He added that “overall, passenger traffic this summer has increased compared to the two previous years. July closed with almost 1.2 million passengers at both airports (Larnaka: 800,000, Pafos 400,000), which corresponds to 82% of traffic of July 2019. Trade deficit up by €1.12 billion in first half of 2022, CyStat data show

Trade deficit was up by €1.12 billion in the first half of 2022, data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat), on Tuesday show. In particular according to the official data, imports of goods (from EU Member States and from third countries) in January – June 2022 amounted to €5,664.3 mn compared to €4,059.9 mn in January – June 2021, recording an increase of 39.5%. Total exports of goods (to EU Member States and to third countries) in January – June 2022 were €1,803.8 mn compared to €1,325 mn in January – June 2021, registering an increase of 36.1%. The trade deficit was €3,860,6 mn in the period January – June 2022 compared to €2,734.9 mn in the corresponding period of 2021, CyStat said. In addition, provisional data for June 2022, show that total imports of goods were €1,195.5 mn compared to €765.7 mn in June 2021, recording an increase of 56.1%.

Cyprus has second largest percentage of firefighters, lower than average spending according to Eurostat

Cyprus was the country with the second largest share of firefighters in its overall workforce in 2021 in the EU, according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical service of the European Union on the occasion of the large increase of fires in multiple member states due to increased temperatures and the effects of climate change. Also, according to data regarding government spending on fire protection services in 2020, Cyprus spent about 0.4% of its government expenditure, which was lower than the EU average for that year (0.5%).

EU expects countries aspiring to join to align with sanctions against Russia, P. Stano said

The European Union expects countries aspiring to join the union to align with its decisions on foreign policy, including on sanctions, Commission spokesperson Peter Stano said responding to a question during the midday briefing in Brussels regarding Turkey’s alignment with sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. The discussion was a result of a series of question on whether EU member states could in the future limit visas for Russian tourists. Responding to a written question posed by the Cyprus News Agency, Stano recalled that in March, the European Council “called on all countries to either align with our sanctions or introduce similar national measures in respect to Russia’s illegitimate aggression against Ukraine”.

Commissioner for State Aid Control Stella Michaelidou has welcomed the fact that her Office has taken the lead at European level and has been an example for other member states in view of the implementation of the Central State Aid and De Minimis Registry. In a press release it is noted that based on available data until today, Cyprus, together with Lithuania and Spain, are the only countries that have implemented a Central State Aid and De Minimis Registry.

New residence permits reach pre-pandemic levels in Cyprus and the EU, according to Eurostat

New residence permits issued in the European Union, as well as in Cyprus, to non-EU citizens in 2021 reached pre-pandemic levels, according to data on first residence permits published by Eurostat, the statistics office of the EU. In 2021, 2,952,300 first residence permits (i.e. permits issued to a person for the first time) were issued in the EU to non-EU citizens. The number increased by 31% (or 693,700) compared with 2020, reaching the pre-pandemic level observed in 2019 (2,955,300). A total of 22,190 new residence permits were issued in Cyprus in 2021.

Germany is the largest producer of ice cream in EU and France the largest exporter, according to Eurostat

In 2021, the EU produced over 3.1 billion litres of ice cream, a 4% increase from the previous year according to data released by Eurostat, the EU’s statistical service. In the same year, EU Member States exported 254 million kilograms of ice cream to non-EU countries, worth a total of 850 million euro, while imports of ice cream from non-EU countries amounted to 71 million kilograms, worth a total of €192 million.

Commission concerned over expulsion of Greek journalist from Turkey and over freedom of expression in the country

The European Commission is concerned over the news of the expulsion of Brussels accredited Greek correspondent Evangelos Aretaios from Turkey, as well as over “Turkey’s attempts to undermine freedom of expression and the pluralism of media”, spokesperson Nabila Massrali said, responding to a question by the Cyprus News Agency during the day’s midday briefing. Aretaios is the Brussels correspondent for Cypriot media group Dialogos and Greek newspaper Real News, has worked as a correspondent for Cypriot media over a period of years, and is also a research associate at the University of Nicosia and ELIAMEP.

President Anastasiades to pay official visit to Israel in November

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will pay an official visit to Israel in November at the invitation of his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog. The Republic of Cyprus will revoke seven passports that were granted through the Cyprus Investment Program, following a decision by the Cabinet, Minister of Interior, Nicos Nouris, announced on Wednesday. Speaking after today’s meeting, Nouris said that the passports were granted to four investors and three of their family members. He explained that the Cabinet’s decision is based on the findings of the Inquiry Committee, the sanctions imposed by the EU and the current legislative framework.

General Government generates surplus of €141.8 million in first seven months of 2022

The fiscal accounts of the general government generated a surplus of €141.8 million for the period of January – July 2022 marking a sizeable improvement compared to a deficit of €7,111 million in the respective period of last year, according to preliminary data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat). As a percentage of GDP, the general government’s surplus in January – July 2022 amounted to 0.6% of GDP compared with a deficit of 3% in the corresponding period of 2021.

Tourism-related services lead the way in Services value turnover in Q2 2022

Accommodation and food services toped annual gains in the Turnover Value Index in the second quarter, reflecting the recovery of the tourist sector. According to data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), the turnover value index in accommodation and food services jumped by an annual 84.3% in the second quarter of 2022, followed by administrative and support service activities with 69.8%, information and communication with 34.8% and professional, scientific and technical activities with 9.0%.

Financial aid to Turkish Cypriots up by €1.4 million in 2021

Minister of Finance Constantinos Petrides who briefed on Wednesday the Cabinet about the financial aid, said that in 2021 it amounted to €40.4 million and was increased by €1.4 million compared to 2020, when the financial assistance amounted to €39 million.

The Index of Industrial Output Prices for July 2022 jumped by an annual 27.5% marking the inflationary pressures in economic activity in the midst of the war in Ukraine and the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. According to data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), the Index of Industrial Output Prices for July 2022 reached 140 units (base 2015=100), recording an increase of 4.6% compared to June 2022 and 27.5% year on year.

Cyprus against horizontal ban for visas to Russians at Gymnich, FM raises Turkey’s non alignment with sanctions

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides said that Cyprus was against a horizontal ban on EU visas for Russian citizens, pointing out that relations between peoples should be maintained, while also drawing attention to the issue of Turkey’s non alignment with EU sanctions, during Wednesday’s informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers (Gymnich) which took place in Prague, under the auspices of the Czech Presidency of the EU. According to a press release by the Cypriot Foreign Ministry, during his intervention Kasoulides pointed out that the measures that will be taken need to “turn against the Putin regime, without harming or having negative effects for the Russian people.” Kasoulides also said that Cyprus was sceptical regarding the possibility of a full and horizontal ban on visas for all Russian citizens and pointed out that there is a need for civil society to continue being in contact.

Cyprus MFA says EU member-states retain the right to examine and approve or reject requests for citizens of Russia

The Cyprus MFA clarifies that the Gymnich decision in principle to suspend the Visa Facilitation Agreement does not mean abrogation or ban on issuing visas to citizens of Russia. MFA Spokesperson Demetris Demetriou wrote on a tweet post this afternoon that the EU Member States continue to retain the right to examine and approve or reject requests for citizens of Russia.
