Christodoulides and Portugal’s New Ambassador Reaffirm Close Cooperation Between Cyprus and Portugal

Nicosia: Christodoulides and Portugal's new ambassador, Carmen Bagulho Silvestre, have reaffirmed the close cooperation between Cyprus and Portugal during an official ceremony at the Presidential Palace.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Ambassador Silvestre expressed Portugal's support for a viable, comprehensive, and lasting settlement of the Cyprus problem under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). She emphasized Portugal's commitment to an independent, united Cyprus, respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity, in line with UN Security Council resolutions, international law, and EU principles.

The new ambassador highlighted Portugal's role as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, where it will strive to support efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue, fully respecting international law. She expressed hope for close cooperation with Cyprus within the Security Council and for strengthening the United Nations multilateral system. Ambassador Silvestre also congratulated Cyprus on its successful Presidency of the Council of the EU, praising the emphasis on autonomy and an open stance toward global affairs.

Further, Ambassador Silvestre acknowledged the significant progress made during the Cyprus Presidency, including complex negotiations on the Multiannual Financial Framework. She commended Cyprus for promoting the European simplification agenda and working on comprehensive measures to ensure collective competitiveness. She also noted the importance of EU membership for both countries in fostering better understanding and cooperation, emphasizing the shared goal of preserving the seas and guiding Portugal during its presidency of the Group of Southern EU Member States-MED9 in 2027.

In his response, President Nikos Christodoulides expressed appreciation for Portugal's consistent support for the reunification of Cyprus based on the UN framework and EU acquis. He congratulated Portugal on its election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, reflecting its commitment to international peace and security. President Christodoulides assured Ambassador Silvestre of the full support of the Cypriot government and his personal backing in her mission.

President Christodoulides also thanked Portugal for its cooperation during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, recognizing the depth of their partnership. He looked forward to continued collaboration, including during Portugal's upcoming presidency of MED9 in 2027. The President highlighted the friendship and trust between the two countries, emphasizing shared values such as democracy, international law, and a common European identity.

Moreover, President Christodoulides noted the potential for further strengthening the partnership between Cyprus and Portugal in trade, investment, the blue economy, and the establishment of direct air links. He reaffirmed the commitment to European values and cooperation for a stronger Union amidst global uncertainties. President Christodoulides expressed confidence that the excellent relations between Cyprus and Portugal will continue to flourish during Ambassador Silvestre's tenure.
