Carl D Francis takes the helm at medtech group focused on reversal of diabetes, NASH, and obesity

LONDON, Feb. 07, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Today Keyron, the medical technology group focused on reversing type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and obesity via an innovative medical device platform, announced the appointment of Carl D Francis as Chief Executive Officer.

The American Diabetes Association states that today 37m Americans suffer from diabetes, with 96m having pre-diabetes. The link between obesity and diabetes is well established, and according to The World Obesity Federation’s forecast in their recently released 2022 Atlas, 67% of women and 51% of men in the Americas will be living with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) by 2030.

Keyron’s patented technology is designed to be a fully endoscopic, outpatient procedure providing the same or greater metabolic benefits of gastric bypass surgery, including a reversal of type 2 diabetes and obesity, as well as NASH and liver fibrosis.

Following successful rodent studies in 2019 and swine studies in 2022, Keyron’s first-in-human trials are planned to begin in early 2024. Keyron is targeting to achieve FDA clearance by 2028, and a US launch is planned as the first target market. The company is now making plans to raise a $15m Series A funding round.

Cyprus has lowest number of people working in transport in Cyprus in EU, second highest percentage of women, according to Eurostat

In 2021, 6.0 million people aged 15-64 years old in the EU worked in the transport sector (land transport, water transport or air transport) for passengers or good, a number which corresponds to 3.1% of total employment in the EU, according to data released by Eurostat, the statistical service of the European Union.

Of these, the vast majority were male (82.9% versus 17.1% female). Nine in every ten people (89.6%) employed in transport worked in land transport (such as road or rail), while 5.7% worked in air transport and 4.7% in water transport (inland waterways or maritime).

Due to its small size and possibly the lack of rail transport, Cyprus had the lowest number of people working in transport among EU member states (5 thousand people or 0.1%). However, Cyprus also had the second largest share of women working in transport in the EU (24.6%).

Also, 83.2% of people employed in transport in Cyprus in 2021 were working in land transport, while 16.8% accounted for air and maritime transport.

Furthermore, more than half of those employed in transport in Cyprus belonged to the 50 – 64 years old age group (36.9% on average in the EU), while only about 10% was in the 15 – 29 age group (12.1% in the EU).

Among the rest of the EU member states, the largest number of people employed in the transport sector in 2021 were in France (842 thousand, 13.9% of the EU total), Poland (792 thousand, 13.1%), Germany (689 thousand, 11.4%), Spain and Italy (627 thousand and 626 thousand, respectively; each 10.4%).

The smallest number of employed people were in Cyprus and Malta (5 and 6 thousand, respectively; each 0.1%).

When it came to employment in the transport sector by sex, the highest shares of females were recorded in Malta (25.2%), Cyprus (24.6%) and Germany (24.4%).

At the other end of the scale, the lowest shares were recorded in Romania (9.7%), Croatia (11.5%) and Bulgaria (12.1%).

The Authority expects that organizations will take the necessary measures to comply with the provisions of the legislation, noting that failure to comply with the content of the circular entails possible measures and sanctions in accordance with the provisions of the legislation.

Turkey denies help from the Republic of Cyprus, Civil Defence on standby to send rescuers

The Republic of Cyprus expressed its readiness to assist in the rescue efforts after the devastating earthquake in Turkey, but the Turkish side did not accept help from the Republic.

Foreign Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Kornelios Korneliou told CNA that “we conveyed this readiness both through the European Civil Protection Mechanism and through the Greek Cypriot negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou”, however the offer of help was not accepted by the Turkish side.

Korneliou explained that through the European Civil Protection Mechanism, each EU member state can express its readiness to provide assistance in cases of natural disasters such as earthquakes. “Following consultation with the Civil Defence we expressed our readiness to assist with a rescue team of 21 people and last night they replied ‘no thanks’,” he said.

He also said that the negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side, Menelaos Menelaou, conveyed to the Special Representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ergün Olgun, “our desire and readiness to assist in the rescue efforts”, but “we were told that they do not need our help”.

It is noted that Turkish Cypriots have already been identified among the victims of the earthquake, while other Turkish Cypriots are still missing.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is also noted that from the very first moment, the Republic of Cyprus, through the European Civil Protection Mechanism, made available to the Mechanism a rescue team to help the rescue efforts. “This offer was rejected, as the needs, at least at this stage, require the immediate deployment of heavy-duty specialised rescue teams.

It is also stated that a coordination meeting will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the participation of the Citizens’ Commissioner, the Ministry of Health, the Red Cross and the Pancyprian Volunteer Coordinating Council. This meeting will look at practical ways of supporting those affected in Turkey and Syria.

A search and rescue team of the Cyprus Civil Defense stands ready to travel to Turkey to provide assistance following the devastating earthquake that left behind thousands of dead and more under the rubbles, Civil Defense Spokesperson Panagiotis Liasides told the Cyprus News Agency.

Liasides said that that the search and rescue team of the CD is certified with INSARAG External Classification from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and added that this certification corresponds to the Civil Defense’s operational readiness to respond, on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, to humanitarian aid missions, where search and rescue is required, based on international standards.

Liasides also told CNA that an anti-earthquake code also applies and is implemented based on EU directives.

He advised citizens to remain calm and not to panic when there is an earthquake and to study thoroughly all the advice and recommendations by the Civil Defense.

Rescue teams from 19 EU countries are helping Turkey, Crisis Management Commissioner says

EU has mobilised 27 search and rescue teams from 19 European countries, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management stated in a tweet on Tuesday.

The EU aid towards Turkey is sent via the Civil Protection Mechanism of EU, to help with the earthquake.

The teams are consisting of over 1,150 rescuers and 70 rescue dogs.

The countries sending help are Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Italy, Hungary, Austria, Estonia, Germany, Spain, Slovakia, Malta, Portugal, Montenegro and Albania.

Lenarcic thanked the countries participating, noting that it is “EU Solidarity at its best!”
