Shooters from 19 countries participate in Cyprus Grand Prix 2023

Approximately 170 shooters from 19 countries are participating in the “Cyprus Grand Prix 2023” which begins February 11.

The competition takes place at the very well-known Cyprus Olympic Shooting Range ‘Lakis Psimolophitis’ in the area of Latsia, on the outskirts of Nicosia, which is equipped with 4 separate Skeet and 4 separate Trap – Double Trap layouts.

Among the countries participating are Greece, Ukraine and Norway.

Greece takes part in the games with 16 athletes, Ukraine with 15 and Norway with 10. Latvia participates with 8 athletes, Great Britain with 6 and Serbia with 5. Thirteen other foreign countries are participating with smaller number of athletes. Cyprus is competing with 75 shooters both in skeet and trap.

Commissioner Ferreira expresses deep sadness and condolences for death of T/C teenagers during earthquake in Turkey

Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira expressed her “deep sadness and sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the terrible earthquake that struck Türkiye and Syria” in a statement, referring especially to the Turkish Cypriot teenagers who are among the victims of the earthquake.

“Our hearts ache for the Turkish Cypriot teenagers from Famagusta who were in Adiyaman for a sports event, and lost their lives” Ferreira said.

“Some of the children and the accompanying parents and teachers are known to Commission staff working with the Turkish Cypriot community who join in expressing their deepest sympathies. There are no words that can describe the pain of parents who lost their children” Ferreira added.

“The European Commission stands in solidarity with all those affected. Search and rescue teams from EU member states are supporting the search for the missing, and humanitarian aid has been dispatched” she underlined.

As announced on Wednesday, the European Commission and the Swedish Presidency of the Council will organise a Donors’ Conference in March, in coordination with Turkish authorities, for the people of Türkiye and Syria affected by this tragedy.

UNFICYP to collect humanitarian aid for Turkey from Sunday

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) will collect humanitarian assistance (clothing, blankets, food, water, etc.) from individuals and organizations in view of supporting relief efforts in Turkey in the aftermath of the devastating earthquakes that occurred in the region.

According to a statement by UNFICYP, from Sunday 12th February at 10.00 am, UNFICYP will start accepting humanitarian aid at the Ledra Palace Hotel, through the Fulbright gates for onward transport to Turkey in cooperation with Turkish Cypriot relief efforts.

Cyprus authorities look for the causes of whale deaths on the northern coast of Paphos

Cyprus’ Department of Fisheries and Marine Research is looking for the causes of the death of Cuvier’s beaked whales, a species of “Ziphius”, that were washed up dead on the northern coast of Paphos, proceeding with a postmortem examination and taking samples.

“The necropsy of the whales of the Ziphius species (scientific name Ziphius cavirostris) was carried out in order to find the causes of their death after the washout of six dead, recorded on the northern coast of Paphos in the Polis-Gialia-Argaka areas,” officer of the department of Fisheries and Marine Research Ioannis Ioannou told CNA.

Ioannou said that in an postmortem examination performed on one of them, some samples were taken by a veterinarian of the State Veterinary Services and by a veterinarian of the non-governmental organization ARION, which cooperates with the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, and there will be further examinations. He added that they have information on three more cases of whales washed up dead in the occupied territories of Cyprus.

When asked about the phenomenon, he noted that mass deaths of whales had not occurred in the past, however, one incident was recorded last year, one in 2001 and one in 2002.

Ioannou noted that the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research recorded on Thursday four whales that were washed up on the northern coast of Paphos, in the Polis-Gialias-Argaka areas. Local staff immediately went to the area and after intensive efforts, the three whales were returned to the sea, while the 4th was already dead.

On Friday, four dead whales were recorded on the coastline which is under the control of the Republic of Cyprus (from Poli Chrysochous to Pachyammos), possibly, according to the Department of Fisheries, some were the ones that had been pushed back into the sea on Thursday night.

Ioannou noted that staff from the Department of Fisheries was checking the area to see if other whales will wash up, while they were in communication with Greece authorities to see if there was a similar incident there.

Everything’s ready for Sunday’s elections, Chief Returning Officer tells CNA

Chief Returning Officer Costas Constantinou said that everything was ready for Sunday’s second round of presidential elections.

Constantinou told CNA that on Saturday morning he was going on a tour to make sure that no remnants of the pre-election period were left, that signs were removed and that there was nothing prohibited by law in terms of display and advertising.

Regarding the preparedness of the election centers, he said that the presiding officers have already received all the relevant material, since they received the ballot boxes from Friday and are ready to assume their duties.

Constantinou said that the venue for the proclamation of the new President of the Republic of Cyprus, “Eleftheria – Tassos Papadopoulos” Stadium was also ready, with the ceremony is scheduled to take place at 22:00 (local time) on Sunday.

The result of the second round of the Presidential Elections, according to the Chief Returning Officer is expected around 19:30-20:00 (local time) on Sunday evening. He will then make the official announcement of the final results, after the necessary checks, around 21:00-21:30 before going to the proclamation ceremony of the new President.

Constantinou once again urged people to go to the polls, noting that the weather is expected to be favorable for voters. He added that there will be additional checks of the road network in the mountain communities in coordination with the local Districts, in order to overcome any obstacles for the personnel who will go there for the elections.
