Cyprus Ministry of Health is monitoring information on the spread of Marburg virus infection

The Cyprus Ministry of Health, in a press release said that the Medical and Public Health Services are closely monitoring information on the spread of Marburg virus infection, where cases of the disease have been recorded in Equatorial Guinea and other African countries.

Equatorial Guinea confirmed its first-ever outbreak of Marburg virus disease. Preliminary tests carried out following the deaths of at least nine people in the country’s eastern Kie Ntem Province turned out positive on one of the samples for the viral hemorrhagic fever.

The World Health Organisation is cooperating with local health authorities to locate cases and begin contact tracing.

Marburg virus disease is a highly virulent disease that causes hemorrhagic fever, with a fatality ratio of up to 88%. It is in the same family as the virus that causes Ebola virus disease. Illness caused by Marburg virus begins abruptly, with high fever, severe headache and severe malaise, according to WHO. Many patients develop severe hemorrhagic symptoms within seven days. The virus is transmitted to people from fruit bats and spreads among humans through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people, surfaces and materials.

There are no vaccines or antiviral treatments approved to treat the virus. However, supportive care – rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids – and treatment of specific symptoms, improves survival.

Travelers in Equatorial Guinea should self-isolate and seek medical attention immediately if they experience fever, chills, muscle pain, rash, sore throat, diarrhea, weakness, vomiting, stomach pain, or unexplained bleeding or bruising during or after travel (up to 21 days).

The island’s medical services have updated the relevant protocols as well as action plan to manage cases of hemorrhagic fever. The Health Ministry said that a follow up press release will be issued to inform the public if it is deemed necessary.

Humanitarian aid collection for Turkey and Syria to resume on Monday at Limassol port

The collection of humanitarian aid for the earthquake-stricken areas of Turkey and Syria will resume on Monday at the warehouses of the Ports Authority, near the port of Limassol.

The warehouses will remain closed during the weekend.

Director of Limassol Port, Panagiotis Agathocleous told CNA that no humanitarian aid will be received during the weekend.

“The collection of humanitarian aid will resume on Monday and is expected to continue until Tuesday. By then, it will become clear how the aid will be transported to the affected areas, as we are awaiting instructions from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism”, Agathocleous added.

Clothing, personal hygiene items and food that have been collected during the past week at collection centers operating throughout the government-controlled areas of Cyprus, were transported by National Guard trucks to the warehouses “Amathus Aegeas” company under the coordination of the Cyprus Ports Authority.

“The Cyprus Ports Authority is collaborating with the Commissioner for the Citizens, the National Guard, the Civil Defence, and Amathus Aegeas, which provided the space for the collection and sorting of aid and to be prepared for shipment to the earthquake-stricken areas,” Agathocleous said.

Resuming negotiations for a Cyprus settlement constitutes a priority for Greece, says Dendias

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said that the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue constitutes a priority for Greek foreign policy.

In an interview with the Greek newspaper “Ta Nea”, published Sunday, Dendias noted that Athens expects to welcome the new President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in his first visit abroad after his election.

Referring to his close cooperation with Christodoulides during his time as Foreign Minister, Dendias expressed hope that after the completion of the electoral processes in both Greece and Turkey, there will be “a clearer starting point” on the Cyprus issue.

“I look forward with great pleasure to welcoming Christodoulides in Athens, in order to resume the discussions on issues of common interest. First among them is, of course, the issue of the resumption of negotiations for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of the UN Security Council resolutions. This means breaking the deadlock that emerged over the last year and a half”, Dendias said.

“I hope that when the electoral processes in Greece and Turkey have been completed, we will have a clearer starting point”, he said.

Asked about the possibility of a quadrilateral meeting of the 3+1 scheme (Greece, Cyprus, Israel, and the US), Dendias said that such a scenario is “a bit premature.”

“It is a bit premature to talk about future meetings of different cooperation schemes. The government in Israel is new and the President of the Republic of Cyprus has just been elected. Greece has also practically entered an election cycle, so we will have to wait a bit,” he said.

He stressed, however, that “energy projects offer an important area of cooperation in the wider region and especially during the current juncture of the energy crisis.”
