Commissioner Verhelyi urges Turkey to conform to EU values and its obligations

The European Union will continue to urge Turkey to comply with its international obligations and the EU values, as an EU candidate state, and to implement the ECHR decisions as a Council of Europe member.

The remark was made on behalf of the European Commission by Olivér Várhelyi, Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, replying to a letter by Cypriot MEP, Demetris Papadakis, and Greece’s MEP, Nikos Androulakis, both of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Greece.

Varhelyi said that freedom and plurality of mass media, are a fundamental principle of the EU and the EU is concerned over attempts to undermine the freedom of expression and pluralism of the media in the Turkish Cypriot community, as is the case of publisher Sener Levent.

As part of the assistance provided to the Turkish Cypriot community, the EU has funded the project “Stronger, freer and more ethical journalism”, implemented by the Turkish Cypriot Union of Journalists. The EU-funded work of the Human Rights Platform, he added, monitors freedom of expression as a fundamental right.

The targeting of media and journalists, Varhelyi said in the letter, is contrary to Turkey’s obligations as an EU candidate state and as a member of the Council of Europe and Turkey urgently needs change the negative trend it has shown in the recent years and make tangible progress in respecting fundamental rights.

The EU, he said, will continue to raise the issue to its Turkish counterparts at all levels, noting that from 2018, due to Turkey’s distance from the EU, its accession negotiations have effectively been inactive.

Concluding, he said the EU will continue to call on Turkey to conform with its international obligations, the EU values as an EU candidate state and to implement the ECHR decisions, as a member of the Council of Europe.

Cyprus secured reference about energy needs of island states in latest Council conclusions, government spokesperson says

The intervention of the President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, in coordination with the Maltese Prime Minister led to the inclusion of a reference to the energy needs of island states in the conclusions of the special summit of the European Council, Government Spokesperson Marios Pelekanos said in a written statement.

Pelekanos pointed out that in its conclusions, the European Council underlined the need to take full account of the concerns of the EU island member states in relation to the achievement of their targets, both in terms of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.

The Spokesman added that the conclusions also note the need to complete and improve the electrical interconnections of Member States, such as Cyprus, which continue to be isolated from the European gas and electricity networks.

Pelekanos referred to the discussions during the second day of the summit, which focused on energy, the high prices affecting households and businesses across the European territory, the EU’s decoupling from Russian fossil fuels, the consequences of the war on global food security and the risk of destabilisation in many parts of the world, and finally the strengthening and coordination of European defence.

The Government Spokesman said that regarding food security, President Anastasiades “expressed his concern about the risks that may arise from shortages of basic commodities such as cereals, but also about the resulting increases in food prices, and stressed the need for the European Union to act collectively to prevent further deterioration of the situation.”

The Spokesman drew particular attention to Cyprus’ position that the case of Egypt is of great importance, as it is the largest importer of grain in the world, 90% of which is imported from Ukraine and Russia.

“If the situation continues to deteriorate, we cannot rule out the possibility of Egypt facing social unrest due to food insecurity,” the Government Spokesman stressed, noting that the EU should continue to provide support to the country with the aim of enhancing food security and resilience.

Finally, President Anastasiades “raised before his European counterparts both the new illegal actions of the Turkish side in the enclosed area of Varosha and the Turkish provocative behaviour in general, as well as the revisionist positions that Turkey continues to put forward regarding the framework for a Cyprus solution,” the Spokesman added, noting that he also expressed “his solidarity with the Greek Prime Minister, given the unprovoked verbal attacks in which Ankara has recently engaged in against Athens.”

Anastasiades also asked his counterparts “to point out to Turkey the importance of ending unilateral actions and provocations in general, as well as of putting the Cyprus issue back on track for resolution”, according to Pelekanos.

Also, the Spokesman said, the President “reiterated our side’s proposals for the adoption of bold confidence-building measures that can restore trust between the two communities and create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations, with the aim of settling the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality, as provided for by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.

BIRMINGHAM, England–(BUSINESS WIRE)– ICCPP launched the full-range ceramic coil solution including disposable ceramic coil at Vaper Expo UK in Birmingham on May 27, 2022 — a new category empowered by its “Digital Transformation” strategy, marking a new era in the global vape industry.

For the first time, ICCPP exhibited as a group and showcased its branded ODM+ solution and full-range ceramic coil solution. Adopting the Gene Tree technology, ICCPP’s ceramic coil will be integrated with the ODM+ business to promote a greater evolution in the industry. The ceramic coil, ICCPP’s first product released since it jointly launched the digital strategy with SAP and PwC, is bound to become a benchmark in the global vape industry.

Breakthrough: ceramic coil solution for disposable and multiple categories

In the vape industry, the ceramic coil technology is a key indicator of technological advancement of a company. ICCPP began to engage in the ceramic coil technology in 2019 by forming a R&D team led by “Peacock Program” talents, aiming to achieve an industry-leading level with the third or fourth generation of ceramic coil, and fully surpass the peers with the fifth or sixth generation.

Committed to becoming the leader in atomization technology, ICCPP brings a natural and pleasant vaping experience to the customers with its nanocrystalline (NC) materials and technical innovation. From thick film to thin film, from wire heating and surface heating to solid heating, ICCPP’s NC ceramic atomization technology has been constantly optimized the data model of the coil and enhancing the team’s R&D strength to address the pain points in the vape coil industry. The newly launched Gene Tree thin film technology features five technical advantages, namely powder-free, improved safety, finer atomization, a longer lifespan, and an improved flavor.

As a result of the continuous endeavor of the R&D team, ICCPP recently launched the new generation of Gene Tree film technology and product applications, which, compared to the third-generation ceramic coil, has improved the flavor, increased the coil lifespan, and improved product reliability, bringing users a natural and pleasant vaping experience.

ICCPP will soon launch a disposable product equipped with the Gene Tree ceramic technology, with such features as longer-lasting flavor, more puffs, better restoration of flavor, and higher reliability, will bring revolutionary user experience, trigger a revolution in the industry, and become an industry milestone.

“Digital + technological innovation” to provide ODM + digital solution

ICCPP’s core advantages at the technical level are derived from its huge investment in scientific and technological innovation. On May 26, ICCPP announced the official launch of the “Digital Transformation Project” at its Shenzhen headquarters, becoming the world’s first major company in the vape industry to cooperate with SAP and PwC. This marks that ICCPP will lead the industry into the phase of digital transformation.

The digital strategy refers to the overall digital innovation of the company integrating R&D, manufacturing, export, overseas marketing, etc. In the future, ICCPP will create an unprecedented “digital closed loop” and new digital competitiveness by creating digital R&D, digital manufacturing, digital marketing, and digital consumer experience. The mode of “digital + technological innovation” will become ICCPP’s underlying competitive advantage, including digitization + chips, digitization + fragrance, and digitization + smart manufacturing. “The company will drive development through digitalization and create new value through digitalization.” Through digital transformation, the company aims to bring greater contributions to the industry and global consumers.

In order to develop ceramic coil, ICCPP quickly simulated the atomization effect by setting a data model and inputting parameters such as interface and size, so as to find the optimal configuration without sample production, thus accelerating product development and delivery. At present, ICCPP has a set of long-term plans for refillable and disposable ceramic coil products, and has reached cooperation intentions with at least 5 overseas major customers.

Mission of a leading going-out company: to empower global customers with technical innovation

ICCPP knows that customers in this era don’t need the traditional ODM anymore, but the branded ODM+. Therefore, the company has launched the new strategic partnership integrating brand positioning, user insight, product design, product development and after-sales, to guide customers to embrace new era of product customization.

Firstly, ICCPP promises to provide customers with the latest technology applications, and give them the same or even better technology as ICCPP’s own brands. Secondly, ICCPP shares all cutting-edge technologies with the entire industry chain in the strategic cooperation, including labs and institutes, automated factories, overseas user insights and global marketing services. This confidence of ICCPP comes from its rich and successful overseas experience and the ability to provide customers with one-stop services. ICCPP is committed to building two global platforms to empower customers: a truly open, Android-like vape technology platform, and a globalization platform based on years of overseas experience.

As the first strategic category after the digital upgrade, the ceramic coil solution can adapt to the full range of product lines. Emboding the industry’s most advanced technologies, it is set to create a new vape category, improve user experience and bring changes to the market structure. On the one hand, ICCPP ODM+ business will undergo the digital upgrade and efficiency upgrade of the whole operation system integrating market survey, R&D, product design, order, delivery, and after-sales; on the other hand, it will establish in-depth cooperation with global customers on the ceramic coil solution. So far, ICCPP has reached cooperation intentions on this ceramic coil technology with many overseas major customers. ICCPP expects to bring more surprises to global customers and restructure the market in future.

Transport Ministers from Cyprus and Greece discuss in Athens the EU legislative package “Fit for 55”

Minister of Transport, Communications and Works of the Republic of Cyprus, Yannis Karousos, and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of Greece, Kostas Karamanlis, met on Tuesday 31 May, in Athens, to discuss the new EU legislative package “Fit for 55”.

The two Ministers exchanged views on the impact of the EU legislative package, emphasizing the regulations that concern the aviation sector (ReFuelEU Aviation), which has already been severely affected by the pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

The Cypriot Minister of Transport, Communications and Works conveyed to his Greek counterpart Cyprus’ concerns about the economic impact of this piece of legislation on island countries and countries in the periphery of the EU.

As he noted, Cyprus has submitted a number of suggestions which, if incorporated into the legislative package, will mitigate the negative effects for the aviation, tourism and economic sectors.

The Cypriot Minister also referred to an impact assessment tool that Cyprus has developed in order to assess the impact that concrete legislative measures have on aviation. Karousos said that a number of EU countries asked for more information on Cyprus’ proposals, after using this tool. This shows that no calculation has been done concerning the cost the new legislation will have on state economies, Karousos underlined.

On his part, Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transport conveyed to his Cypriot counterpart that Greece shares Cyprus’ concerns in view of the discussion to be held between EU Transport Ministers, in Luxembourg, on Thursday, June 2.

Furthermore, he expressed the readiness of the Greek Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure for further cooperation and coordination in order to enable the inclusion of the Cypriot proposals in the legislative package.

At the same time, the two Ministers confirmed that Cyprus and Greece remain committed to the “Fit for 55” objectives, which concern the environment and the reduction of pollutant emissions.

Finally, the two Ministers discussed broader issues of common interest, such as the promotion of electric mobility and the upgrading of public transports.

President Anastasiades briefed EU counterparts over latest Turkish actions in Varosha, proposed CBMs

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades informed his counterparts in the European Council about the latest illegal activities by Turkey in Varosha, and briefed them on the confidence building measures that have been proposed by the Greek Cypriot side, in a short intervention during the second day of the summit of the European Council in Brussels.

The intervention was initially scheduled for Monday but was moved to Tuesday since the discussion on the sixth package of sanctions took up the entirety of the day.

In a tweet, Anastasiades said that he briefed fellow EU leaders “about latest illegal actions by the Turkish occupying forces in Cyprus, inter alia, in the fenced-off area of Varosha.”

“Despite United Nations & European Union calls, Turkey continues to create new faits accomplis, inter alia, at the expense of prospects of resuming negotiations” he added.

The President also noted that he reiterated his proposal for CBMs “that can build trust & pave way for restarting meaningful talks, aimed at a viable solution, based on a BBF” a bizonal bicommunal federation. “EU assistance to this end remains crucial” the President also tweeted.

Anastasiades also said he expressed “full solidarity” with Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis “amid Ankara’s recent inflammatory rhetoric.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.

Any unilateral action to disapply parts of the NI Protocol would undermine the peace process, Irish Ambassador in Cyprus tells CNA

Any unilateral action to disapply parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol by the UK would undermine the peace process and destabilise the achievement of the Good Friday Agreement said Conor Long, Ambassador of Ireland in Cyprus, to CNA.

Ambassador Long was speaking on the sidelines of a media briefing regarding Bloomsday celebrations, which will take place globally, including Nicosia, on 16 June.

Commenting on recent developments regarding Brexit and the Northern Ireland protocol, Long said that the Protocol was jointly formulated and agreed between the EU and this British Government to safeguard the Good Friday Agreement and the gains of the peace process, including avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland, while reminding that the same time that Northern Ireland voted very strongly to remain in the EU.

In addition, Long said that the Protocol protects the Good Friday Agreement and the peace process from the challenges brought about by Brexit, and in particular the type of Brexit chosen by the UK Government, including their decisions to leave both the Single Market and the Customs Union.

“The way forward must be through engagement towards agreed and joint solutions. Unilateral action, effectively disapplying an international agreement such as the Protocol, would neither build trust between the EU and UK, nor support the Northern Ireland peace process”, stressed the Irish diplomat, adding that “we should remain sensitive to the Executive formation process that is underway in parallel in Northern Ireland. While a very clear majority of legislative assembly members elected support the Protocol, the DUP remains the largest Unionist party and its support will be necessary for the formation of a new Executive. It is looking for changes to the Protocol before it will re-enter the Executive”.

Long said that the Irish government fully supports the approach being taken by the European Commission and Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefcovic, noting that last October the EU put forward ideas that would reduce checks and cut paperwork, making the movement of goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland much smoother, while adding that there is further potential to be explored in the package of proposals it put forward last October.

“There is no lack of flexibility of creativity on the EU side, but what is needed now is a partner who is willing to engage constructively – not further unilateral actions”, said Long, who was also very appreciative of the continued patience, support and solidarity from Cyprus and other EU partners.

Asked about possible risks from a possible negotiations deadlock, the Irish diplomat said that it is regrettable that with so many important issues on the EU agenda, not least the Russian aggression in Ukraine, that new threats of unilateral action have once again put Brexit back in the limelight.

“The EU has proposed specific changes to the implementation of the Protocol in its October 2021 proposals and has shown that it remains open to talking and finding flexible solutions in negotiations with the UK about the implementation of the Protocol. We are still awaiting the response from the UK side. We believe that any possible unilateral action to disapply parts of the Protocol by the UK would undermine the peace process and destabilise the achievement of the Good Friday Agreement” he noted, adding that the Irish government is keen to continue to engage with the UK to try and persuade them to abandon this proposed unilateral approach. “Only jointly agreed solutions can bring the legal certainty and predictability that people and businesses in Northern Ireland need”, he stressed.

Finally, asked to comment on whether recent election results in Northern Ireland affect internal political dynamics, as well as relations with the UK, Long stressed that it is essential to recall that the Protocol protects the Good Friday Agreement in all its dimensions and fully recognises the constitutional position of Northern Ireland and the principle of consent.

He also noted that the majority of members of the Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly elected in the recent elections are from parties that support the Protocol (53 out of 90), and support immediate formation of the Executive in Northern Ireland.

“Business in Northern Ireland does not support unilateral action. They want certainty and stability and for the EU and the UK to work together to address the practical issues of concern to people and business in Northern Ireland”, said Long and concluded that the views of the people of Northern Ireland are clear from the fact that the majority of members returned in the May Assembly election support the Protocol.

Our aim is to make handicrafts an economic activity with prospects, says Commerce Minister

“The reorganisation of the Cyprus Handicraft Service was born through our effort to save our intangible cultural heritage, to revive it, to promote it and to develop it as a place of economic activity with prospects,” said Minister of Commerce, Natasa Pilides, in an event presenting the work of the Cyprus Handicraft Service during the years 2020 – 2022, that took place in Nicosia, on Monday.

The Commerce Minister referred to the reorganisation and modernisation of the Cyprus Handicrafts Service and noted that the redesign of the strategy for this purpose “has to do not only with what handicrafts are and how handicrafts are produced, but also with how they stand out better, as well as and how we inspire young people to become more involved with the handicraft sector, either as employees, or as customers, or as proud Cypriots who realise the value of Cypriot handicrafts.”

Pilides stated that after the renewal of the corporate identity of the Service, with the creation of the new logo inspired by traditional embroidery, the further upgrade of the Service store in Nicosia takes place, after its recent renovation, and noted that with the transfer of the Service to the Deputy Ministry of Culture could create an interactive space, suitable for educational activities. She also said that the plans include the creation of a modern website and an e-shop.

In addition, the Minister referred to a number of international actions, such as the integration of the Cyprus Craft Service in the World Craft Council Europe and its representation at the opening of the Homo Faber exhibition of the Michelangelo Foundation in Venice. She also mentioned the participation of five Cypriot artists in the 5th Biennale ”Revelations” at the Grand Palais Éphémère at the “Le Banquet” in Paris, as well as synergies between artists, designers and architects, such as the curators of the Cypriot participation in the 17th International Architecture Biennale in Venice.

She noted that craftsmen, in collaboration with designers and artists, can take the Cypriot product to the next level, so that it can emerge as a means of economic activity and entrepreneurship.

Pilides pointed out that a Memorandum of Cooperation that was signed between the Cyprus Handicraft Service and the Human Resource Development Authority of Cyprus is in this direction, that is to say for the provision of standardised educational programmes in three traditional techniques, ceramics, weaving and embroidery. This, as Pilides pointed out, is a decisive step in the great effort made in the last two years to save the intangible cultural heritage of Cyprus and to promote handicrafts as a place of professional career.

As part of the event, the short films created by the international fashion curator, author and editor at large of Vogue Greece, Filep Motwary, which present the evolution of embroidery, ceramics and embroidery, were screened.
