JOINT STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT VON DER LEYEN AND PRESIDENT BIDEN ON THE MEETING OF THE TRADE AND TECHNOLOGY COUNCIL

At our June 2021 US-EU Summit, we established the US-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) to shape the rules of the road for a 21st century economy, and for rapidly evolving digital and emerging technology. In less than a year, the TTC has become a pillar of transatlantic cooperation, particularly in growing our bilateral trade and investment relationship; resolving existing and avoiding new barriers to trade while countering non-market, trade distortive practices; and in our united response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

Following its first ministerial meeting last September in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the TTC held its second ministerial meeting in Saclay, France. The US co-chairs, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, and United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai and EU Co-Chairs European Commission Executive Vice Presidents Margrethe Vestager and Valdis Dombrovskis built on the rock-solid foundation and announced new initiatives on supply chains, food security, export controls, emerging technology, digital infrastructure, trade, and much more. These initiatives will reinforce our shared values, bolster our global competitiveness, and benefit workers and families on both sides of the Atlantic. We are grateful to the leadership of the TTC and look forward to further progress in the months ahead.

Call for cooperation for protection against the consequences of fire, during the launch of the ‘Fire Prevention Week’

Cyprus’ Justice Minister, Stephie Dracos, called for everyone’s cooperation to protect the country “from the nightmare of fires” on Monday.

She was addressing an event for the launch of the Fire Prevention Week, observed this week, with events aimed at raising awareness on the importance of fire prevention in urban and rural areas. The Fire Prevention Week is being co-organised for the 21st year by the Cyprus Fire Service and CNP Insurance.

The Minister said that respect for human life, protection of property and of nature from the devastating effects of fires was everyone’s responsibility, noting that four people died in the wildfires that broke out last July, while damage to the environment was immeasurable.

She said that the estimated cost of last summer’s urban fires was €11million, while of forest fires was €18.6m.

The Minister referred to state efforts to prevent fires but added that fire safety continues to be everyone’s business. “So, the message is clear. We must join forces to achieve the best possible results in both prevention and the fight against fires,” Dracos said.

The Chief of the Fire Service, Polyvios Hadjivassiliou, said that every year, out of the approximately 13,000 calls they receive, 8,500 concern fires, with about 5,000 concerning fires in the countryside and the rest, urban areas, while almost 93% of fires are due to human activity.

Hadjivassiliou also referred to the constant upgrade of the Fire Service, in order to be able to help people, with continuous training of its members and its participation in European Programmes, by replacing every year a number of fire engines and acquiring new equipment.

He added that the Fire and Rescue Service of the British Bases which, he said, is a partner of the Cyprus Fire Service and “contributes significantly and supportively” to operations at all levels, was also launching a fire prevention campaign this week.

The General Manager of CNP Insurance, Andreas Stylianou, said that Fire Prevention Week is now an institution, since, for 21 years, the company, together with the Fire Service have been joining forces for a common cause, raising awareness about the dangers of fires and ways to prevent them.

Various activities have been planned for Fire Prevention Week, as well as the distribution of information material to rural communities, schools, shopping malls, offices, hotels, soldiers and more.

Awareness events will culminate with a “Fire Prevention Open Day” that will take place on Saturday, May 21, from 1000 to 1300 at the Nicosia Mall, where the public will have the opportunity to see fire engines and equipment, while there will be activities for children. CNP Insurance and Fire Department officials will brief the public on fire safety issues and distribute small gifts.

Commission reaches agreement to adapt delivery schedules of Pfizer vaccines, Kyriakides says

The European Commission and vaccine developer BioNTech and Pfizer have agreed to adapt the delivery schedules of vaccines in order to better address the needs of member states, according to a Commission announcement.

Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides noted that these changes have been agreed in light of concerns put forward by the member states themselves.

“This amendment meets legitimate concerns on matching supply and demand, whilst ensuring security of vaccine supply if and when this is needed later in the year,” Kyriakides said.

The agreement reached will ensure that member states will have access to the vaccines when they need them – including future variant adapted vaccines if authorised – during the fall and the winter.

Doses scheduled for June and throughout the summer will now be delivered in September and during the autumn and winter period 2022, when Member States will more likely need additional stocks of vaccines for national campaigns and for meeting their international solidarity commitments.

Should an adapted vaccine be authorised by the autumn or winter period 2022, Member States will have access to the deliveries in the form of adapted vaccines.

“We continue to closely follow with BioNTech-Pfizer and Moderna the supply of COVID-19 vaccines, and stand ready to support Member States in ensuring the necessary flexibility,” Kyriakides added.
