UNSG’s reports on good offices mission and UNFICYP currently being drafted by UN team in Cyprus

The UNSG’s reports on his good offices mission and the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus are currently being drafted by the UN team on the island and are expected to be distributed to the UN Security Council members at the beginning of January 2023, CNA has learned.

The discussion on the reports before the UN Security Council is expected to take place during the third week of January, while the resolution for the renewal of UNFICYP’s mandate for six more months should be approved by January 31st.

The UNSG’s Special Representative and head of UNFICYP, Colin Stewart, is expected to hold separate meetings with Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, and Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, before travelling to New York for the discussion before the UN Security Council.

On December 7 the UNSG’s good offices mission in Cyprus will host an end of the year reception in Ledra Palace to which President Anastasiades and Tatar have been invited.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
