Nicosia: The UN Secretary-General is preparing to take action on the long-standing Cyprus issue, with the involved parties anticipating updates on the progress in the coming future, as reported by the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).
According to Cyprus News Agency, following recent discussions between UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres and his personal envoy on Cyprus, Mara ngela Holgun, there is an expectation among the involved parties for clarification on the direction of the peace process. The focus will be on how the situation is progressing substantively, and Guterres is expected to initiate some steps soon.
There is currently no information available about Holgun's next visit to Cyprus. The island has remained divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern part. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, no resolution has been reached, primarily due to Turkish resistance. The most recent negotiations, held in July 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without a conclusion.
In 2025, the Secretary-General hosted two informal meetings on Cyprus, the first in March in Geneva and the second in July in New York. A tripartite meeting with Cyprus leaders also took place in late September during the UN General Assembly High Level Week. An anticipated informal meeting in a broader format, expected before the end of 2025, has not yet been scheduled. Mara ngela Holgun, as the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus, continues to engage with the related parties.
