There is coordination between Nicosia and Athens on the situation in the wider Mediterranean region, Cyprus President says

There is coordination between Cyprus and Greece so that the necessary messages are sent at the UN General Assembly, about the situation in the wider Mediterranean region, Cyprus’ President Nicos Anastasiades said on Friday, on his way to the inauguration ceremony of the coastal pedestrian road in Protaras.

Asked by a journalist on whether he discussed earlier in the day with the Greek Prime Minister issues concerning the forthcoming UN General Assembly, during his short trip to Athens to receive an aircraft donated by the Greek Government, to be used by the Cyprus President and Ministers for official trips abroad, he said, they did.

He said the two countries have scheduled a coordination of contacts “in order to send the messages about the whole situation in the wider Mediterranean region”.

Asked if they also discussed the energy issue, the President said, “everything is being discussed, and the necessary coordination is being achieved, through joint policies”.

President Anastasiades is set to address the 77th UN General Assembly on September 23.

Replying to another question about the adoption earlier in the week of the national minimum wage, the President reiterated that he feels pleased, “because, indeed, we are among the countries that have set a national minimum wage.”

He said he observes the reactions against what has been agreed, but clarified that “it must be understood, that, for now what is being adopted is the institution” of the minimum wage. Any other possible differences, he added, will be discussed at the competent advisory body. He also said that one must not overlook, that, the first year after the establishment, a review will be made, while after that, there will be a review every two years.

What’s important, he added, is that with the adoption of the minimum wage a safety net is being created for workers.

On another question about tourism, President Anastasiades noted that this year’s arrivals are close to 2019 levels, which was a significant year for tourism, adding that the goal to secure tourism arrivals from alternative markets was achieved.
