The state honours the memory of Isaac and Solomou, Foreign Minister and Government Spokesman say on Twitter

The state honours the memory of Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ioannis Kasoulides, and Government Spokesman, Marios Pelekanos, said in posts on their Twitter accounts, on the occasion of the anniversary of the murder of the two men in August 1996.

“We honour the memory of the heroic martyrs Tassos Isaac and Solomos Solomou who fell victims of Turkish barbarism and extremism. We continue our efforts for the liberation and reunification of our homeland”, wrote Kasoulides. On his part Pelekanos stated that “we remember and honour today the heroic martyr Tassos Isaac. He proved with his sacrifice that Cypriot Hellenism will not surrender. He gave his life for his homeland, proving that our generation follows the principles and values of heroes from our glorious past”.

Tasos Isaac was killed on 11 August 1996 in the buffer zone, in the area of Dherynia, during an anti-occupation demonstration organized by the Cyprus Motorcycle Federation to protest against the continued Turkish occupation of the northern part of Cyprus. He was kicked and beaten to death by a group of 15-20 people who surrounded him and threw him to the ground. Cyprus Police had issued then arrest warrants against eight people in connection with his murder and requested Interpol’s assistance for their arrest.

Solomou, Isaac’s cousin, was murdered by Turks in August 1996, during an anti-occupation demonstration. He was shot while climbing a flag post to take down the Turkish flag.
