The Cyprus Medical Association and the Panhellenic Medical Association condemn the organising of international medical conferences in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus and have undertaken an initiative to put an end to the efforts of the illegal regime to indirectly use medical science to gain recognition.
A press release issued by the two associations note that they have informed the relevant ministries in Athens and Nicosia and have sent letters of protest to relevant European bodies such as FEMS, CPME and UEMS EEC.
Only for September, it noted, there has been information about three such conferences which clearly fall within the various actions which aim at indirect recognition of the illegal regime, contrary to UN Security Council resolutions.
In addition to the debatable scientific basis on which such conferences are held in the occupied territories, any participation of Greek Cypriot or Greek doctors would give status to an illegal regime, at the expense of legality, and would have a negative effect in relation to efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, the statement concluded.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island’s northern third. An illegal breakaway regime in the northern part of the island is recognised only by Ankara.
