Ruling DISY leader, Averof Neophytou, who officially submitted on Thursday his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus, called on members of the public, regardless their political affiliation, to back his policies, that, are “beneficial” for the country, as he said, while declaring that he can keep the economy strong and struggle for the solution of the Cyprus problem.
In his statement after submitting his candidacy, Neophytou, said that, the country needs “competent leadership, more than ever”, adding that, the coming years will be crucial for the country and its citizens. The presidential elections have been scheduled for February 5.
Neophytou said that the country’s economy today is strong but that this may not be the case in the future, noting that if one compares the state of the economy when they assumed power with the conditions today, his party, DISY, has proven that they can take responsibilities.
On the Cyprus problem, he said that, he will struggle for a return to dialogue and for a solution, but also the liberation “and the reunification of our divided homeland.” “This will be the most radical and most effective reform, which will change the destiny of our country and people”, he added.
Referring to the elections, Neophytou called on the members of the public, to reflect on what is important for them and their children’s future, but also for Cyprus’ future.
His candidacy, he said, has “a clear orientation” and a “realistic programme with a perspective for the country” and called on voters, no matter their political affiliation, to support these policies that are “beneficial”, as he said, for the country.
President of Cyprus’ House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, who proposed Neophytou’s candidacy, said that the DISY leader was “the most ideal choice” to lead the State and to efficiently tackle the various challenges that lie ahead.
