The citizens want serious changes in the quality of democracy and in Cyprus problem, said G. Colocassides

The citizens are indignant and want serious changes both in the quality of democracy and in the Cyprus issue where we see a policy of appeasing Turkey which would result in a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation solution, independent candidate Giorgos Colocassides said on Thursday.

In statements after submitting his candidacy for the February presidential elections, he said that “I have submitted my candidacy as an independent citizen, I have not consulted with parties. I stand by the citizens, who are asking to finally see something different in this country.”

He noted that, “I am not going to bargain my honesty and my integrity with any party, I am not going to compromise with corruption.” This he said can be compared to the three candidates supported by political parties, “who are not simply supported by party leaderships, but they are also blessed by President Anastasiades.”

Asked if his candidacy would be more effective if he had the support of a political party, he said that “at this point, we are talking about fighting corruption that starts from the party scene. So, nominations embraced by the parties will have difficulty to bring about change. As I said before, we are looking for drastic change and this means that the citizen should vote following his conscience and not party dictates. Our homeland and our country comes first, not our party.”

Asked to comment on a statement by the President of DIKO that they chose Nikos Christodoulides as the honest and clean candidated, Colocassides replied that “Nikos Christodoulides comes from a government that is accused by everyone as a corrupt government. He served this government for years, identified with this government and to this day defends the record of this government. Let the citizens, who complain about the level of corruption we have in the country, judge this.”
