Nicosia: Asylum applications in Cyprus reached 165 in November 2025, according to data published on Tuesday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat). In October 2025, applications had amounted to 330.
According to Cyprus News Agency, at the level of the European Union, a 26% decrease was recorded in first-time asylum applications compared with November 2024. Specifically, 54,825 third-country nationals submitted a first-time application for international protection, compared with 74,495 in the corresponding month of the previous year. A 12% decrease was also recorded compared with October 2025 (62,375).
At the same time, 11,455 subsequent applications were recorded in the EU, representing an increase of 62% compared with November 2024 (7,090), but a decrease of 23% compared with October 2025 (14,900).
In November 2025, Venezuelans constituted the largest group of asylum seekers, with 8,060 first-time applications. They were followed by Afghans (5,125), Bangladeshi nationals (3,585) and Syrians (2,365).
The highest number of first-time applications was recorded in Italy (12,195), Spain (11,875), France (8,845) and Germany (8,740), with these four countries accounting for 76% of the total number of first-time applications in the EU.
Across the EU, there were 12.2 first-time asylum applications per 100,000 inhabitants in November 2025. Based on the population of each Member State (as of 1 January 2025), the highest rates were recorded in Greece (42.4 per 100,000 inhabitants), followed by Spain (24.2) and Italy (20.7).
According to the data, a total of 1,370 unaccompanied minors submitted a first-time asylum application in the EU in November 2025. The majority originated from Somalia (245), Eritrea (160), Afghanistan and Venezuela (135 each), and Egypt (130). The countries receiving the highest number of applications from unaccompanied minors were the Netherlands (375), Germany (265), Greece (185), Spain (155) and Belgium (95).
