Shipping Deputy Minister travels to Australia to attend events for 1974 coup and Turkish invasion

Shipping Deputy Minister Vasilios Demetriades will be representing Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades in the events organised by Cyprus organisations in Australia to mark the 1974 coup and Turkish invasion.

He travels to Australia Wednesday and according to a press release he will attend events in Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney.

The Deputy Minister will meet with Archbishop Makarios, parliamentarians and state officials, the Cyprus organisations and will brief the local media on the Cyprus problem.

He will also have the opportunity to exchange views on issues related to shipping industry and blue economy with the aim to establish cooperation on a bilateral level and in various fora the two countries are represented in.

Demetriades will also have consultations with the business community in order to inform them about opportunities in Cyprus as a business centre and to promote Cyprus shipping.

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. Numerous peace talks under the UN aegis to reunite the island under a federal roof failed to yield results.

The coup staged by the Athens’ junta against the elected government of President Makarios on July 15, 1974, served Turkey as a pretext to impose its divisive plans against Cyprus.
