NICOSIA: Asylum seekers who commit serious criminal offences will soon lose their subsidiary protection status, Deputy Minister of Immigration and International Protection Nicholas Ioannides announced on Thursday. This statement followed a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace that approved a bill addressing this issue.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Cabinet approved the bill amending the Refugees Act. Ioannides expressed gratitude to the Legislation Commissioner and the Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus for their assistance in drafting the bill. He explained the bill’s main objective is to incorporate a European Union provision allowing for the revocation of subsidiary protection if holders commit serious criminal offences. This move is seen as aligning with EU legislation and demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing foreign delinquency.
Ioannides elaborated that while Cyprus offers hospitality and international protection in line with international obligations, any abuse of thi
s hospitality could result in not only criminal sanctions but also the revocation of subsidiary protection. He clarified that subsidiary protection is afforded to individuals who do not qualify for refugee status but have been expelled from their country for other reasons.
The Deputy Minister also clarified that the amending bill pertains to criminal offences committed within the Republic of Cyprus. Both refugees and those under subsidiary protection are subject to the same laws as Cypriot citizens. If they commit serious criminal offences, their international protection status is revoked.
Addressing the repatriation of these individuals, Ioannides noted the challenge, as many come from countries where they face risks. However, he mentioned the possibility of returning them if agreements with third countries are reached or if conditions in their home country change. Although no formal agreements with third countries exist, Ioannides emphasized ongoing consultations and cooperation that facilitate monthly re
turns. He anticipated that developments regarding these agreements would be finalized by Friday.
