Brussels: The European Commission has launched infringement procedures against Belgium and Cyprus for failing to periodically review water permits in compliance with the Water Framework Directive. This directive obliges Member States to implement measures for each river basin district to maintain the integrity of water bodies, such as rivers and lakes. These measures are crucial for controlling water abstraction, impoundment, point source discharge, and other impacts on water quality.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Commission’s action involves sending letters of formal notice to both countries, highlighting their failure to align with the directive’s requirements. In Belgium, discrepancies exist in the regional legislation of Brussels-Capital, Flemish, and Walloon regions, especially concerning the intervals for reviewing water abstraction and point source discharge authorizations. In Cyprus, national legislation lacks any provision for periodic review as mandated by the directive.
The Commission has
set a two-month deadline for both countries to respond and rectify the identified shortcomings. Failure to provide a satisfactory response may lead to the issuance of a reasoned opinion by the Commission. The infringement procedures underscore the Commission’s commitment to ensuring member states adhere to EU environmental legislation, crucial for sustainable water management across Europe.
