Nicosia: There are no differences with the Greek Government regarding the GSI project, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated on Wednesday, emphasizing the necessity for the fulfillment of the commitments made by Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO).
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President reported that he had been briefed by the Law Office in the afternoon about the European Public Prosecutor’s Office initiating an investigation into possible criminal offenses related to the project. President Christodoulides clarified the government’s position in response to press inquiries, noting that Nicosia considers the project of strategic importance and its success hinges on IPTO’s adherence to its commitments. He reiterated, “We expect the implementation of these specific commitments.”
The President further mentioned that the Law Office was informed by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office about the decision to investigate potential criminal offenses following various complaints. However, the EPPO has not specified whom these potential offenses may concern.
President Christodoulides stressed that the government aims to maintain Cyprus’ credibility and reputation untarnished, indicating there is no room for ambiguity on this matter. In response to another question, he reiterated that there are no disagreements with the Greek government and emphasized that IPTO’s obligations must be fulfilled for the project to be sustainable.
When questioned about potential accountability for the LNG terminal project at Vasiliko, the President confirmed that the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is also conducting an investigation into that project. He mentioned that the government is waiting for a report from the company responsible for the project.
The President acknowledged that the ongoing investigations by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office into both the GSI and Vasiliko projects are causing delays. He underlined the importance of Cyprus’ reputation and credibility, asserting that these should not be compromised.
