Nicosia: Panayiotis Pourgourides has been appointed as the new Head of the European Commission Representation in Nicosia, Cyprus. In this role, he will serve as the official representative of the European Commission in Cyprus under the political authority of President Ursula von der Leyen. The effective date for this appointment has yet to be announced.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Mr. Pourgourides, a Cypriot national, possesses a robust background in international relations and brings a wealth of experience from his career in European affairs and national politics. His expertise in strategic insight, stakeholder engagement, policy coordination, and diplomacy is directly applicable to his new role. His professional journey has equipped him with a deep understanding of navigating complex communication environments, fostering constructive relationships with various stakeholders, and effectively communicating across different governance levels. This, coupled with his comprehensive knowledge of European institutions, positions him well to lead the Commission’s work in Cyprus.
Most recently, Mr. Pourgourides served as a Member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Stella Kyriakides. Before joining the Commission, he worked in the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and as Secretary of the Cyprus Parliamentary Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
The European Commission maintains Representations in all capitals of EU Member States and Regional Offices in Barcelona, Bonn, Marseille, Milan, Munich, and Wroclaw. These Representations act as the Commission’s eyes, ears, and voice in EU Member States. They interact with national authorities, stakeholders, and citizens, and inform the media and the public about EU policies. Heads of Representations are appointed by the President of the European Commission and act as her political representatives in the respective Member State.
