Panayiotis Pourgourides Appointed as Head of EU Commission Representation in Cyprus

Nicosia: The European Commission announced the appointment of Panayiotis Pourgourides as the new Head of the European Commission Representation in Nicosia. This decision was made public on Wednesday following the College of Commissioners meeting in Brussels.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Pourgourides will officially represent the European Commission in Cyprus, operating under the authority of President Ursula von der Leyen. While the specific date for him to begin his new role has not been confirmed, it will be announced in due course.

Pourgourides brings extensive experience in European affairs and international politics to this position. He has honed his skills in strategic analysis, stakeholder relations management, policy coordination, and diplomacy, which are essential for his role in representing the Commission in Cyprus.

Before this appointment, Pourgourides served as a Member of the Cabinet of Commissioner Stella Kyriakides at the European Commission. His career also includes working in the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus and serving as Secretary of the Cypriot Parliamentary Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The Commission noted that Pourgourides’ selection reflects confidence in his capacity to manage complex communication and political settings, foster cooperation with institutions and political stakeholders, and advance the EU’s priorities in Cyprus. His comprehension of European institutions and his background in national and European politics make him particularly suited for this role.
