Larnaca: State Ministers and experts participating in the 18th Conference of the Regional Commission for the Middle East of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation on animal health issues, its impact on food security, and ongoing efforts to upgrade infrastructure. The conference is being held in Larnaca from November 24 to 28.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Cyprus’ Minister of Health, Michalis Damianos, emphasized the critical role of animal health in global health and food safety. He noted Cyprus’ advancements in upgrading facilities and improving prescription systems, which will support the sector significantly. Damianos underscored that assemblies like this aim to foster broader cooperation, especially within the region, to tackle shared challenges effectively.
Dr. Emmanuelle Soubeyran, Director-General of the World Organization for Animal Health, expressed gratitude to the Cyprus government for organizing the regional conference. She highlighted the need to enhance animal welfare, which is crucial not only for animals but also for food security, the economy, and safe trade. She emphasized the significance of Cyprus’ Health Minister’s presence, linking animal health with public health due to the transmittable nature of many diseases between humans and animals. Dr. Soubeyran also pointed out the importance of addressing antimicrobial resistance and gathering regional veterinary officers to discuss regional priorities.
Dr. Soubeyran further explained that the region’s position between three continents makes it vulnerable to transboundary animal diseases, stressing the necessity of regional collaboration to effectively combat these challenges. She highlighted the importance of working beyond national borders to achieve greater effectiveness in managing animal health issues.
Jordan’s Agriculture Minister, Dr. Saeb Khreisat, reaffirmed his country’s dedication to animal health and fostering safe trade. He argued that reporting diseases should be seen as a strength and not a weakness, promoting cooperation among countries. Dr. Khreisat reiterated Jordan’s commitment to collaboration, capacity building, and information exchange both regionally and globally, emphasizing the nation’s role in ensuring food security locally and worldwide.
