The program aims at encouraging young talented students to engage in research and innovation
Nine exceptional undergraduate students have been selected to participate in the prestigious Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus, for the summer of 2022.
This is the 14th year that the UROP program has been running at the KIOS Center of Excellence. The program is extremely competitive, with a large number of applications being submitted every year by students from Cyprus and abroad.
The students participating in the Program this year are (in alphabetical order): Katerina Christodoulou, Aristi Christoforou, Lambros Dionysiou, Stavros Hadjicostis, Kleitos Kountouris, Ioannis Kyriacou, Panayiotis Michaelides, Vasiliki Rizou, and Maria Watt. Five of the selected students are studying at the University of Cyprus, while the other four are studying abroad (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki – Greece, University of Oxford, University of Glasgow, University of Edinburgh – United Kingdom).
The selected students will have the opportunity to work with the KIOS faculty and researchers on innovative research projects, which contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The KIOS Center of Excellence undertakes research in several high-tech areas, with application for intelligent transportation systems, smart water networks, next generation telecommunication systems and networks, power systems – smart grids and integration of renewable energy sources, robotics – embedded and IoT hardware and software systems, as well as disaster management and health care/biomedical systems.
The UROP program at the KIOS Center of Excellence aims to promote excellence and encourage young talented students to engage in research and innovation, with the ultimate goal of upgrading the country’s competitiveness in education, innovation and entrepreneurship.
The student Panayiotis Aristodemou, who participated in the UROP Program 2020 commented: “This program has helped my professional and personal development because I learned how to do actual research in some extend. Also, problem solving was another thing I learned. Furthermore, I collaborated with many researchers from KIOS Center of Excellence which is something useful, to be able to get feedback about the material you are working on and also learn from them. To summarize, research and communication were the most important things this program has helped me with”.
