The negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side, Menelaos Menelaou, leaves on Tuesday for New York, where he will hold meetings this week with officials of the UN Secretariat and representatives of UN Security Council member states, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has learned.
Menelaou will hold his meetings in view of the release of the UNSG’s reports on his good offices mission and the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the briefing of the UN Security Council by the UNSG’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, expected to take place on July 12.
CNA has learned that the UNSG’s reports are expected to be released before Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos will also pay a visit to New York next week. He will meet with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on July 11 to brief him on all actions Nicosia has undertaken so far with a view to break the deadlock and achieve the resumption of the negotiations on the Cyprus problem, and to discuss with him possible further steps.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
