Navy Adapting to Support Cyprus’ New Strategic Orientation Says DefMin

Nicosia: The Cyprus Navy is dynamically adapting in order to effectively support the Republic’s new strategic orientation, Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas stated during a celebration at Evangelos Florakis Naval Base on the occasion of Saint Nicholas Day, the patron saint of sailors. He emphasized the importance of enhancing the operational capacity of the Navy in a constantly changing geopolitical environment that presents new challenges for Cyprus’ stability and security.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Palmas highlighted that the Navy is responding to modern, multi-level requirements and has broadened the scope of its missions. He noted that Cyprus is pursuing a targeted foreign policy aimed at deepening bilateral relations with neighboring states and significant regional actors. These initiatives, he said, enable Cyprus to actively contribute to promoting peace, stability, and security in the region while aligning with the European Union’s goals within the framework of the European Neighborhood Policy.

Palmas also mentioned the adoption of modern technologies and advanced systems to bolster the Cypriot defense industry. He praised the high professionalism of the personnel, describing it as the foundation of the strength and dignity of the Armed Forces.

Commander of the Navy, Admiral Minas Solomonides, remarked on the ongoing Turkish occupation of Cyprus and the need to upgrade the army to defend the independence and sovereign rights of the homeland. He pointed out the constantly changing geopolitical environment in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region and stressed the necessity of further strengthening the Navy to become a significant factor of maritime power.
