UNSG’s Envoy Expresses Optimism for Cyprus Talks, Calls for Public Support

Nicosia: UNSG personal envoy for Cyprus Maria Angela Holguin has expressed optimism regarding the forthcoming talks on the island’s future and urged the public to support their leaders.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Holguin, who recently met with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, held discussions on Saturday with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace. She described her return to the island as a positive step and recounted her inspiration from a recent engagement with the youth in Amman. Holguin emphasized the importance of the upcoming meeting on Thursday, expressing hope for a “very substantial and very productive” dialogue. She remarked on the significance of the leaders meeting after many years of not doing so, underscoring the need for community support to enable progress.

President Christodoulides, in his welcome remarks, highlighted the importance of substantive discussions and reiterated his readiness to collaborate with Holguin and the UN Secretary-General. He stressed the need for political commitment and expressed anticipation for the meetings scheduled on December 11.
