Menelaou-Olgun continue to discuss about Technical Committees work and CBMs, while awaiting DiCarlo’s visit

Negotiator of the Greek Cypriot side, Menelaos Menelaou, and Ergün Olgun, the special representative of Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, continue their meetings in Nicosia, after their return from New York, while awaiting a forthcoming visit to Cyprus by the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo.

The dates on which DiCarlo will visit the island have not been fixed yet, however, as CNA has learned, she will probably also visit Ankara, Athens and London, for meetings with officials of the three guarantor powers. Cyprus President, Nicos Anastasiades, said last month after a meeting he had with the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, in New York, that the latter gave instructions to DiCarlo to visit Cyprus for a fact-finding mission, during fall.

Last Thursday Menelaou and Olgun had an online meeting with the participation of the UNSG’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Colin Stewart, while they are expected to meet again on Thursday, October 6.

CNA has learned that during their last meeting they reviewed the situation in general, without having any concrete results for the time being, while they continued discussion on issues related to the bicommunal technical committees and the CBMs.

Moreover they exchanged views on the content of the meetings that took place in New York, while awaiting for the announcement of the dates for DiCarlo’s forthcoming visit to Cyprus.

Sources told CNA that DiCarlo’s visit basically aims at giving the message that the UN continues its involvement, interest and efforts with a view to revive the political process on the Cyprus problem, and for the prospects for a settlement to remain alive.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results.
