Nicosia: Labour Minister, Yiannis Panayiotou, pledged on Wednesday to continue efforts to bridge differences over the Cost of Living Allowance (CoLA) between trade unions and employers, amid a looming three-hour general strike set for September 11.
According to Cyprus News Agency, following a Cabinet meeting, Panayiotou expressed optimism about reaching an agreement. He mentioned plans to take a detailed position on the issue within the coming week. The Minister emphasized the importance of both parties showing positive intent and noted that the announced strike does not align with the state’s industrial relations code, as the Ministry has not declared an impasse.
Panayiotou announced upcoming separate meetings with all involved parties. He highlighted the government’s success in renewing major collective agreements and strengthening the Cyprus economy and middle class. The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to dialogue, aiming for a permanent agreement on CoLA based on the 2023 transitional agreement, contingent on a constructive approach from both sides.
When asked about a potential proposal to resolve differences, Panayiotou explained that all scenarios had been considered during preparatory work. He stressed that any mediation proposal would only be submitted when there is a solid foundation for acceptance. The Ministry remains focused on the process, and with constructive contributions, progress could prevent the strike. Panayiotou will decide whether to hold a joint meeting with unions and employers based on the progress made.
