Brussels: The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Constantinos Kombos, represented the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, at the 11th EU-Tajikistan Cooperation Council held in Brussels. On Thursday, he is set to participate in the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) meeting.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Kombos co-chaired the EU-Tajikistan Cooperation Council alongside Sirojiddin Muhriddin, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan. The Council provided a platform for a thorough evaluation of EU-Tajikistan relations and facilitated discussions on regional and international matters of mutual interest.
Key topics at the Council included the progress of the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA) and other significant political developments, focusing on justice, human rights, and the rule of law. Economic discussions covered trade, connectivity, energy, water, and environmental issues, aiming to enhance cooperation and investment opportunities.
In foreign policy and security, both parties exchanged views on regional stability and relations with regional partners, including security and counter-terrorism. They acknowledged the strengthening of EU-Central Asia relations, following April’s EU-Central Asia Summit in Samarkand.
The EU aims to deepen political dialogue with Tajikistan, leveraging high-level contacts and exploring security cooperation. On the sidelines, Kombos met with his Tajik counterpart to discuss bilateral relations and expressed plans to visit Tajikistan during the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2026.
Another press release from the Ministry highlighted Kombos’ participation in Thursday’s EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels. Discussions will include Russian aggression against Ukraine, the Middle East, Sahel, and Sudan, as well as EU-ASEAN relations.
Kombos will also attend a working dinner at the 4th EU-Indian Ocean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and is expected to meet with several counterparts during his Brussels visit.
