Nicosia: The University of Nicosia is set to host a pivotal event titled “European Security Challenges and the Role of Cyprus,” bringing together notable figures to discuss the pressing issues facing the European Union. The event will take place at the UNESCO Amphitheatre on December 4, 2025, from 18:00 to 19:30, followed by a reception.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the symposium will be chaired by Dr. Michalis Kontos, an Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Politics and Governance at the University of Nicosia. Key speakers will include Professor Andreas Theophanous, President of the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs, Mihai Sebastian Chihaia, a Policy Analyst at the European Policy Centre, Stavri Kalopsidiotou, Head of the Human Rights Policy Sector of AKEL, and Euripides Evriviades, Ambassador Ad Honorem and Senior Fellow at the Cyprus Center for European and International Affairs.
The discussions will focus on the EU’s current security challenges, such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and developments in the Middle East, particularly the Israel Gaza conflict. The forum will emphasize the importance of proactive EU measures and highlight Cyprus’ strategic position in the Eastern Mediterranean, which equips it with a comprehensive understanding of regional issues. Cyprus’ history of addressing humanitarian crises and facilitating dialogue underscores its capacity to contribute constructively to EU efforts.
The unresolved Cyprus problem will also be a key topic, with discussions on how a resolution is critical for regional stability. The EU’s role in supporting these efforts will be explored as a means to enhance peace, cooperation, and stability, thereby reinforcing its influence on the global stage.
