Nicosia: Temperatures inland are expected to climb to 40°C from Sunday until Wednesday, prompting the issuance of a yellow warning each day during that period, according to Meteorological Officer Mattheos Papadakis, who spoke to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).
According to Cyprus News Agency, the first yellow warning for high temperatures is expected to be issued on Saturday afternoon. Papadakis noted that temperatures are currently around 2 to 2.5 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average, but the country is not experiencing a heatwave, which is determined not only by temperature but also by humidity and wind conditions.
Today, temperatures are expected to reach 39°C inland, 31°C on the western coast, around 33°C on the remaining coastal areas, and 27°C in the higher mountainous regions. According to Papadakis, the weather will generally be mostly clear, with increased cloud cover over the mountains during the afternoon from today through Wednesday.
He went on to say that temperatures will rise further from tomorrow, reaching around 40°C inland, 35°C along the southern and eastern coasts, 32°C on the western and northern coasts, and about 30°C in the higher mountain areas.
"With these temperatures, we will issue a yellow warning for high temperatures affecting the interior. Roughly the same weather conditions are expected to continue on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday," he said.
Asked about humidity, Papadakis said that it will generally remain low, except during the evening in coastal areas, where patchy mist and low cloud are also expected.
Commenting on the observation that "so far the summer has been fairly mild and not too harsh," the Meteorologist agreed that temperatures had been close to the seasonal average, but noted that it now appears that we are gradually moving into a period of higher temperatures.
