Council of EU Confirms St©phanie Laulh©-Shaelou as CJEU Advocate General for Cyprus

Brussels: The Permanent Representatives of the European Union member states on Friday confirmed the appointment of St©phanie Laulh©-Shaelou as Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) for Cyprus, while also reappointing Koen Lenaerts of Belgium as a judge of the Court.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Laulh©-Shaelou was appointed as one of the CJEU's 11 Advocates General following the resignation of Nicholas Emiliou, and will serve the remainder of his mandate, which expires on 6 October 2027. She is Professor of European Law and Reform and Dean of the School of Law at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) Cyprus.

Alongside Laulh©-Shaelou's appointment, Lenaerts was reappointed for a new six-year term as judge, running from 7 October 2027 to 6 October 2033. His reappointment forms part of the partial renewal of the composition of the Court of Justice, as the terms of office of 14 judges and six Advocates General are due to expire on 6 October 2027.

The appointment decision will enter into force upon its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The Court of Justice of the European Union comprises two courts: the Court of Justice and the General Court. Judges and Advocates General are appointed by common accord of the governments of the member states following consultation with an independent panel responsible for assessing candidates' suitability for the office.
