‘Go insane as we exist’: LGBTI+ activists project Pride Parade message onto Bosphorus Bridge

Amid widespread bans on LGBTI+ events, activists found a creative way to deliver their message. The 21st Istanbul Pride Parade Committee projected a message onto the Bosphorus Bridge using laser lights in anticipation of tomorrow’s Pride Parade in the city.

In a video shared on the committee’s social media accounts early today, activists can be seen on a boat sailing beneath the bridge that connects Asia and Europe. They projected the message “As we live, you go insane” onto the bridge, followed by the date of the parade.

In a statement, the committee expressed, “The time has come, the queen of months, June’s last Sunday. It’s time to march, queers!”

“Get dolled up, put on your makeup, and on Sunday, we MARCH!

“Our 21st Istanbul LGBTI+ Pride Parade will take place on Sunday, June 25, at 15:00. Don’t be late, come and join us. Don’t forget to follow us on social media, organize, meet, support each other. We will be together, we will march together, and you will hear from us, queers!

“We march against those who try to silence us with their oppression. We resist for our rights, for freedom, for equality, queers! Thump thump, thump thump!”

The action takes place against the backdrop of widespread bans on LGBTI+ events during Pride Month. Just two weeks ago, during the Trans Pride March was not allowed in Istanbul’s Taksim amid heavy police presence. However, the activists successfully assembled at an undisclosed location, defying the restrictions, and delivered a powerful statement. Ten people were detained during the event
