Nicosia: The most important thing is to ensure the implementation of the agreement between the United States and Iran, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday, adding that Lebanon's President requested Nicosia's assistance in helping to ensure that the agreed provisions are carried out.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides expressed his views upon arriving at a graduation ceremony for doctoral students at the Cyprus University of Technology. He welcomed the development of the US-Iran agreement, noting its significance, especially as Cyprus holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
President Christodoulides revealed that he had a telephone conversation with Lebanon's President Michel Aoun on his way to Limassol for the ceremony. He highlighted that an important aspect of the agreement pertains to Lebanon and the actions of both Iran and Israel concerning Lebanon, which is a critical issue demanding focus.
EU leaders are set to discuss the matter in Brussels on Thursday, with a particular emphasis on ensuring the implementation of the agreed terms. Christodoulides reiterated that the reaching of the agreement is important, but stressed that the key priority is its implementation.
When questioned about President Aoun's concerns regarding the provisions affecting Lebanon, Christodoulides confirmed that Aoun sought Cyprus's assistance. This assistance is expected from Cyprus's position as the EU Council President and as a neighboring country that maintains dialogue with all involved parties, to facilitate the implementation of the agreement within their capabilities.
