Nicosia: Total employment in the Broad Public Sector in the first quarter of 2026 reached 78,388 persons, according to data published on Monday by the Statistical Service. The figures reveal that employment in the General Government was 73,236, while Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies employed 5,152 persons.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the General Government sector, which includes State Employees, Non-Profit Organisations, and Local Authorities, saw employment figures of 55,354, 11,476, and 6,406 persons, respectively. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, employment in the Broad Public Sector increased by 1,354 persons, marking a 1.8% rise.
The report highlights that employment in Central Government rose by 339 persons (0.5%), Local Authorities by 825 persons (14.8%), and Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies by 190 persons (3.8%). The Statistical Service notes that the significant increase in Local Authorities employment is primarily due to a 55.2% rise in District Local Government Organisations, accounting for 512 additional persons.
Compared to the fourth quarter of 2025, there was an overall increase of 264 persons (0.3%) in the Broad Public Sector. Employment grew across all categories, with Central Government adding 49 persons (0.1%), Local Authorities 181 persons (2.9%), and Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies 34 persons (0.7%).
