Brussels: The European Commission’s latest annual report reveals an increasing engagement of national parliaments in dynamic political dialogue with the Commission, showcasing a broader spectrum of legislatures participating actively.
According to Cyprus News Agency, national parliaments have intensified their collaboration to influence European Union affairs, offering proactive input on the Commission’s legislative programme long before official proposals are made. This initiative to enhance their role in EU policymaking is evident through their collective actions, such as forming informal groups and co-signing opinions. A significant example of this collaborative effort is the joint contribution for the strategic agenda for the 2024-2029 institutional cycle, provided through the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs (COSAC).
The principles of subsidiarity and proportionality play a crucial role in ensuring that the EU intervenes only when it is more effective than individual national governments, and that its actions remain proportionate to its objectives. The report provides an important annual overview of how these democratic checks and balances are being implemented.
