European Commission Reinforces Support for Ukraine with Significant Loan and Energy Aid

Kyiv: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, alongside President Ant³nio Costa and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marked the fourth anniversary of Russia's war against Ukraine with a renewed commitment of support from the European Union. The EU has been a steadfast ally, providing nearly EUR 200 billion in military and financial aid since the conflict began, and plans to continue this support.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President von der Leyen outlined a strategic plan to reinforce aid to Ukraine, focusing on a EUR 90 billion loan, dubbed the "steel porcupine loan," designed to fortify Ukraine's defense capabilities. This initiative aims to address urgent defense needs by procuring advanced equipment such as drones, missiles, and ammunition, with a delivery target set before Easter. Additionally, the EU seeks to integrate its defense industries with Ukraine's, leveraging Ukrainian innovations for broader applications.

The European Commission also announced a substantial energy support package to assist Ukraine through the winter. Having already provided over 11,000 generators, the EU has allocated EUR 100 million for immediate energy needs and is preparing a long-term Winter Energy Plan for 2026-2027. This plan, named "Repair, Rebuild, Restart," will involve EUR 920 million to stabilize Ukraine's energy infrastructure, promote renewable energy production, and modernize power grids.

In response to Russian attacks on the Druzhba pipeline, the EU condemned the actions and praised Croatia's efforts to maintain oil transport to Hungary, Slovakia, and Serbia via the Adriatic pipeline. The EU is also preparing its 20th sanctions package to maintain pressure on Russia, targeting its economic and military resources.

The European Centre for Democratic Resilience has been launched as part of the European Democracy Shield initiative, aiming to counter foreign information manipulation and disinformation. This center will strengthen democratic resilience across the EU by supporting election integrity and fostering capacity-building projects.

The EU remains committed to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and reconstruction efforts, emphasizing the importance of transatlantic and global solidarity. The future of Ukraine, as envisioned by the EU, involves integration into the European Union, with ongoing support for its accession reforms and post-war rebuilding.
