EU Relies on Cyprus Presidency for Strategic Cooperation, Says Metsola

Nicosia: The EU relies on the Cyprus Presidency, stated the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, during a joint press conference with the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. This statement was made after their meeting at the Presidential Palace and their participation in the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament in Nicosia, ahead of the upcoming Cyprus EU Presidency beginning January 1st.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Metsola expressed the European Parliament’s eagerness to collaborate closely with the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU on numerous issues, including migration, the Multiannual Financial Framework, housing, and Ukraine. President Christodoulides assured the European Parliament of Cyprus’s commitment to close cooperation, emphasizing that Cyprus assumes the Presidency with a sense of pride and responsibility. He highlighted Cyprus’s role as a bridge for cooperation, noting that the region could serve as a convergence point between EU and US interests.

President Christodoulides reiterated his intention to invite Turkish leaders to upcoming European Council meetings in Cyprus, emphasizing that the Cyprus problem is a European issue. He outlined the Presidency’s priorities, including enhancing EU autonomy, security, defence, and relations with neighboring regions through partnerships and collaborations.

Metsola praised Cyprus as a strong EU partner, expressing confidence in Cyprus’s leadership during the Council Presidency. She highlighted the importance of removing national barriers and integrating markets, particularly in energy and digital sectors, to foster new opportunities and prosperity across Europe. Metsola also reaffirmed Europe’s support for Cyprus, emphasizing the European Parliament’s commitment to a unified Cyprus under UN resolutions.

The Conference featured discussions on various topics, including EU autonomy, defence and security, migration, and international agreements. The event concluded with a dinner hosted by President Christodoulides in honor of the European Parliament delegation. Metsola and her delegation are set to continue engagements with the House of Representatives.
