Defense Minister calls for regional cooperation on energy transition in an intervention at the 4th Paris Peace Forum

Defense Minister Charalambos Petrides has called for international and regional cooperation between Ministries of Defense and Armed Forces to exchange ideas and best practices on energy transition and adoption of environmental solutions.

The Minister was speaking during a teleconference on addressing climate change, in which he participated at the invitation of the Minister of the Armed Forces of France Florence Parly.

A press release of the Ministry issued Friday said that the Ministerial meeting, which took place in the framework of the 4th Paris Peace Forum, was attended also by Minister of the Armed Forces of France Florence Parly, Minister of Defense of Spain Margarita Robles, Minister of Defense of Estonia Kalle Laanet, Senegal’s Defense Minister Sidiki Kaba and Yasushi Noguchi, Director General of International Relations at the Ministry of Defense of Japan.

According to a press release, the Minister of Defense noted that Cyprus is located in an area of increased climate impact and called for international and regional cooperation between Ministries of Defense and the Armed Forces to exchange ideas and best practices on energy transition and adoption of environmental solutions. He also presented a regional initiative of the President of the Republic of Cyprus on cooperation and synergies in the region to address climate change.

Petrides presented measures taken by the Ministry of Defense such as building green camps, implementing sustainable waste management and raising awareness among the members of the Cypriot armed forces on environmental issues.

All participants stressed the need for concerted action on active contribution of the armed forces, the press release said. They also agreed on implementing policies in those areas where the armed forces could contribute to energy transition, to the use of smart and green technologies and to awareness-raising on environmental sustainability and biodiversity.
