New york: The Republic of Cyprus has affirmed its unwavering support for the United Nations Youth Office during the 79th Session of the General Assembly. At the discussion focusing on the UN Secretary-General’s report concerning the Youth Office, Cyprus showcased its commitment to the Office’s mandate and initiatives.

Cyprus expressed approval of the Secretary-General’s third report on the UN Youth Office, commending the progress and milestones achieved, particularly the Office’s impact on various fronts.

Panayiotou highlighted the Office’s leadership in advancing the Youth2030 strategy, enhancing partnerships, and promoting youth affairs within the UN system. He applauded the launch of the 2025-2028 strategic plan and stressed the significance of the Youth Office’s engagement with Permanent Missions.

Emphasizing the vital role of youth, Panayiotou remarked that young individuals are essential agents of positive change, crucial to promoting peace, security, sustainable development, and human rights. Cyprus, he noted, is a staunch advocate for the inclusive participation of youth in decision-making processes at all levels, including within the United Nations.

Panayiotou underscored the Youth Office’s priority to boost youth participation in intergovernmental bodies and processes within the UN, acknowledging the increasing presence of youth in critical discussions. He also referenced Cyprus’s national efforts to foster youth involvement, announcing the drafting of a new ‘National Youth Strategy’ through a participatory approach.

On the international stage, Panayiotou highlighted the role of youth in devising innovative solutions to global challenges, acknowledging the significance of Security Council Resolution 2250 on ‘Youth, Peace and Security’ and the ‘Pact for the Future’ adopted last year. These frameworks establish crucial foundations for enhancing youth involvement in peace and security agendas.

He underscored the importance of establishing a dedicated secretariat to enhance UN coordination on youth, peace, and security issues. Cyprus reiterated its full support for the Youth Office’s mandate and work.

As the world approaches the 30th anniversary of the World Programme of Action for Youth and the UN80 celebrations, Panayiotou stressed the importance of ensuring youth voices are not only heard but also reflected in decision-making processes shaping the future.
